Back in the days of Bake and Nise, she was more of the shy, pseudo little sister character who was used more to teach Araragi a lesson (you can't save everyone) than to be a regular cast member. It was when SS hit that changed things up drastically.
As we all know, when spooky sleeves gave the white bracelet to her, she thought she had another oddity on her hand (also as we know, it was an "illusion" - sort of a cheap ending, in my opinion). This allowed her a way to sort of vent all of her personal problems out.
Many people hate her because she's a bitch, but I'd like to play devil's advocate. She was supposed to be class rep of a class filled with kids who'd literally kill each other over trivial things such as love (how she got attacked in the first place). Even the staff depended on her to do her job, which she clearly did not have a snowball's chance at performing correctly. Her "snap" is a vent of internal frustration, angry at everyone living in a state of eternal awkwardness that constantly claws at you. Honestly, I'd start to go insane if I were back in school and had to enter a place where everybody distrusted and even hated each other.
In terms of her "cuteness", it's hypocritical from a viewer's perspective to hate her despite people loving a character like Bird because of her cuteness or her "Platinum Dance". In universe, it was very odd for me to hear that she used it to get whatever she wanted. I don't think it was her using her pros for manipulation as much as it was people assuming she was hopelessly cute and pandering to it. Her parents never really developed an interest for her, minding their own business instead of trying to connect with her - a big shame on their part.
Personally though, I feel that either the author or anime directors just don't like her. She was forgettable early on, and in SS it seemed they wanted to make her as unlikable as possible.

Snake is cute, and some (some) parts of her arcs are at least interesting, but given the wealth of better characters in monogatari she is clearly not best girl.
I would be perfectly fine with snake if snakefags would stop trying to push their boring, sub-par waifu on us and more often than not talk down the other girls.
Every other girl/kaiki manages to be liked by a section of a thread without calling everyone else a shit most of the time, monkeyfags, batfags and firesistersfags seem to get along just fine, the only real point of difference in the /a/ fanbase other than annoying snakefags is probably the whole crab=reddit thing.

1. Do nothing, and let the already vapid circlejerk continue
2. Simply say that Snake is their favorite, only to be met with a number of curt replies with "smugreaction3.jpg" in each post
3. Be "forceful" in their "love" for Snake, only to be met with backlash from the community that this is the reason why no one likes them.
In short, if you are a character that wasn't already loved by the fanbase/community, you're dealing with a losing hand. Because of the nature of /a/, I doubt Snake will ever not be looked down upon unless some miracle roundabout arc comes into play.
