To be fair, it's not complete utter failure in japanland.
For anime, there are other anons who can put it in words better, but simply put: QUALITY. Some also upset they half-assed the potential of darker theme.
Mobage was obvious, there's no way to compete with the likes of GBF, LLSIF, etc.
3D part is mildly successful as their concerts were usually sold out. This means there are at least a few thousands WUGner. They are also fully backed by avex.

I've never played the mobage and it's too late to play it now in order to figure out what went wrong. It goes without saying that their throw everything at us and hope something sticks did work but for everything that stuck there was another slid from from the window and onto the ground.
I guess I should be thankful that another mobage released around the same time (T7s in Feb 2014) has now reached it's 2nd Anniversary and is one of the more profitable music rhythm games in Japan.
Actually I can think of one reason why the concerts are going good. WUG has an official fanbase (i.e. membership) and like any exclusive member plan- this gives you some extra perks such as an extra vote in the WUG elections and first access to tickets.
