I really wonder what the end goal will be.

Guess we'll find out once the train reaches Ayame's uncle's place.
>>
Maybe the mission that Mumei talked is about a cure?

Because the solution to their problem is either killing ALL kabane or making a vaccine.

I doubt that, especially in the span of one cour.

Ayame is concerned with the preservation of her subjects after her station fell, so getting them to her Uncle's station.

Ikoma wants to mass produce his weapons, so people have a fighting chance and to educate people that the virus isn't a death sentence so long as you manage to stop it before the brain.

Mumei is a mystery at this point, we'll have to wait and see who her brother is.
>>
>>140866301
No way they can just make a vaccine, especially given their tech. The only way this can end in good way is if the American continent is untouched by the Kabane.

I don't see where he can possibly put a projectile on that weapon. I mean, it looks like the back-end of a larger weapon and he's suppose to put in a barrel and an ammo loading system in front of the pile-driver or something.

>>140873625
You'd need like a three episode infodump just to satisfy your nerd cravings. They might release some supplementary info after the show is over, but I highly doubt they're going to go into much detail beyond "it's an armored steam train".

>>140874023
It throws a few curveballs. Spoilers below:

>the kabane exhibit a level of intelligence, to the point that they can drive a train, trick humans, and use ambushes and misdirection
>they get pissed when one of them is killed, showing some sort of empathy or group think in action
>although they sometimes shamble they are very much capable of sprinting, climbing, tearing stee, and jumping
>The kabane don't eat people, they usually just bite them and leave them mostly intact to turn
>the kabaneri (what Ikoma, the MC, and Mumei are) are half zombies, but since they need to feed on human blood it seems more like some kind of vampirism than zombies

It definitely changes the formula enough to stop this from being some shitty stock zombie movie. There's only three episodes out, give them a shot and see if you like it. I think it's definitely worth trying.
>>
>>140874236

>>140874124
>implying ignorant, superstitious peasants that pray to a bonfire will have the critical thought capacity to do that
>>
>>140874257
Well no, but that's my point. Whenever anyone gets bitten they just turn, but if everyone who gets bitten becomes a kabaneri then their numbers are going to rise fast.
>>
>>140874107

True. I had forgotten that paying to invisible omnipresent gods is what designates a civilized society. Bonfires and burning bushes are nearly prehistoric.

>>
>>140874413
You misunderstand me, I'm an Atheist, not some neo-Christian /pol/ shitposter, so I am not criticizing them for their particular brand of religious stupidity. But seriously, they thought that if they didn't stop the train in kabane infested territory to pray to a fire, their grandchildren wouldn't be able to pass to the after life. If it wasn't for the boiler breaking, they would have been totally fine risking all of their lives to do whatever voodoo feel good bullshit they wanted, regardless of consequences. That shows a remarkable depth of superstition and ignorance. Add to that that they think the Kabane condition is a magical curse and that their station was just mostly eaten by those very beings, and I can see how they would overreact to Mumei suddenly asking to drink their blood. Even your most educated, modern person would probably be very on edge and impulsive after a scenario like this. You take an uneducated peasant that thinks this is all magic and demons, and are you really surprised they flipped out? Come on.
>>
So does this take place in the future or past?

>>140874578
You on the right
>>
>>140874124

To be fair, she didn't ask for it in the most reasonable manner. She just said it couldn't be helped and reminded them she was half-kabane.
>>
>>140874523
There's dozens, if not hundreds of people on the train, and only two kabaneri. Even if they needed to feed daily, most people could go months to a year between donations. It's totally manageable as long as a system was put in place. Considering how useful the kabaneri are, it would be in everybody's best interest to contribute.

>>140874578
>spot the main character
>>
>>140874197
As opposed to 90% of the population turning into super violent killer zombies that infect with a scratch? It's probably a much better alternative, especially since if people started changing to kabaneri rather than kabane then they can start killing off the kabane and actually solve the issue rather than delay the inevitable.
>>
>>140874658
Again you overestimate these simple folk's intelligence.
>>
>>140874523
They literally just said the train was so packed full of people that they didn't even have food and water for them.

>>
>>140874606
Alternate past. I remember some anon posting something about this being a "normal" progression of history until a certain point, then the kabane and steampunk shit showed up.

>>140874692
I wasn't saying the peasants would be the ones accepting and implementing this, but rather Ayame and the bushi. The peasants may be too stupid for their own good, but I think at least some of the powers that be realize what's best. And since the bushi have guns and control the train, the plebs would fall in line pretty fast.
>>
>>140874606
In near future. Kabane is a military project which goes out of control.
>>
>>140874593
>>140874658

Read the comment string, my point is that one or two Kabaneri needing blood isn't an issue, but if everyone who gets bitten becomes a Kabaneri and the demand for blood exceeds what regular humans can produce it would become a problem.
>>
is the character designer of the old macross doing this? cuz this animation looks strangely similar to his
>>
>>140874645
>>140874600
True. It's obvious that Mumei either likes stirring shit or is way divorced from reality. Jaded and tired of this shit is a possibility too, if she is vastly older than she looks due to plot virus.
>>
>>140874680
But if they increase in number to the point that there just isn't enough blood without killing people, some of them will kill people. Most people aren't so altruistic as to die so that others can live.
>>
>>140874774
It's just the character design style of the 80s.
>>
>>140874771
Oh, my bad. That's actually an interesting point, i the show was longer I'd love to see that fleshed out more. I saw a movie once where vampires take over the world and turn most of humanity, but the remaining humans are either in hiding or being severely overused for blood. The powers that be cut the blood to 20-30% purity in an attempt to stop starvation, but the society is on the verge of collapse due to a lack of human cattle to feed everyone. It was actually a really interesting look at the logical conclusion of these "vampires take over the world" scenarios.

>>140874799
I am leaning towards her being divorced from reality. It's been clear a few times that she says shit regardless of the consequences, and does literally whatever she wants. After the whole "the weak die, the strong live" comment, I think she really just doesn't give much of a fuck about any of the "weak" around her that couldn't even kill one kabane if they wanted to.

I'd prefer the old and jaded route though. I know it's kind of overused, but I have always loved it when stories do that. Also it would make the possibility of a canon relationship between her and Ikoma possible due to no worries about him fucking a twelve year old.
>>
>>140874606
>>140874716
according to the summary on >MAL, it takes place somewhere in the middle of the industrial revolution.
>>
>>140874716
There is already dissent among the bushmen spearheaded by that Kurisu retard. They are too dumb and/or indoctrinated to agree to voluntarily feed the zombie their blood. Maybe Ayame herself could get behind this, but her authority would only last for so long.
>>
>>140870675
It's basically a supped up captive bolt pistol. I'm guessing instead of shooting a piece of metal it just shoots pressurized air though. He never puts anything in it to shoot and I'm pretty sure he's used it at range in episode 2.
>>
>>140874962

Her communication problems could be attributed to her being a child rather than old and jaded.
>>
>>140874903
As opposed to turning into kabane that kills and infect people? If they can have a fighting force of kabaneri, then the fighting can be relegated to them and less people will get infected in the first place and solve the issue and "50% of the people" won't be infected in the first place. You're assuming all the kabaneri will just sit on their ass and demand blood all day doing nothing and not be a substantial work and fighting force.
>>
>>140874997
That's true. Cunt Samurai is a complete reactionary tard, and Ayame is mostly a milquetoast decoration so I guess my idea wouldn't work here. Maybe if her father was still alive he could enforce it through strength of will, but she isn't there yet.

After this whole stabbing thing with Ikoma though, I'm hoping she's starting to harden the fuck up.

>>140875032
He mentioned metal steam in the HorribleSubs release I watched, so I think there's some sort of metal in there.
>>
>>140875049
Yeah, I remember an anon mentioning that yesterday or the day before. He said she's developmentally stunted due to being badass as hell, and can't really communicate well as a result of her superiority complex.

But she seemed to communicate ok with her priest bro and Ikoma before he went full kabaneri, so I don't know how much value to put in that.
>>
>>140874962

Daybreakers, it had a great concept but it was let down a little by the forced action. Same as that film with the time=currency thing. Actually that's what happened with Tokyo Ghoul, at first it was great with the focus on people who's survival depends on other people dying, then it turned into a generic action shounen.
>>
>>140874962
The audience wouldn't like a character that doesn't give much fuck about any of the weak. History has proven that people like competent characters that begrugingly help the weak despite pretending they don't care about them. Something along the lines of a condescending "shouganai, I guess I have to save your asses again."
I bet that's what Mumei will turn out to be.
>>
>>140875155

She had her serious moments in episode 1, but it doesn't necessarily mean she can communicate in a way that builds trust.

>>
>>140874799
You guys are forgetting that she did try to ease the blow. She spent a bunch of time actively playing with those kids in an attempt to show them that she doesn't mean any harm. If she really didn't give a fuck she would have just stormed in there demanding blood.

She's probably had to deal with this kind of reaction for years and realizes the best way is to just be blunt when actually asking. Plus, she doesn't seem to be ashamed about what she is or what she needs.

>Daybreakers

Thanks man, I saw it on the SciFi channel and thought it was a really neat movie, especially since it was the Scifi channel and all. The time=currency movie was In Time I am fairly sure, which was another great idea as you say. The executions of both left something to be desired, but I really appreciate new ideas even if they aren't done well, so I still really enjoyed both. The same goes for that Limitless movie from a few years back about the drugs that made you super smart, but ended up fucking you up in the long term.

I am thoroughly convinced that most stories would be much, much better by playing the initial concept straight rather than trying to add a "twist" or introduce new elements to make it excited (ie unnecessary action that detracts from the interesting points). Too bad most creators don't agree with me.

Now, I don't actually give the writers this much credit, but if she was very hungry after lots of 'exercise' of kabane killing... well, I know I can get pretty shitty to people when I haven't eaten all day. Even if it's not being shitty, your mind doesn't work as well when you are super hungry.

>I bet that's what Mumei will turn out to be.

Didn't she already do that with the whole "I didn't help those people, they just happened to follow me" shtick? And before she cleared the Kabaneri to help them, her preamble was mocking them for taking too long to decide. So far she totally embodies the "I hate the weak but help them anyways" cliche.

Kabane ja nai
>>
>>140874962
Neither old and jaded nor divorced from reality, just doesn't give a fuck. From a Darwinist point of view she is the only worthy being on the train. She has been raised in an environment where might make it right, where people die because they are weak, and she knows she's the biggest mama cat on the train.

She's not old enough to be jaded, but she is not divorced from reality. Indeed, she sees reality exactly like it really is.

When she says that people are ignorant weakling, they are. When she says weak die in this world, they do. When she says there is nothing the samurai could do to stop her, it's true. Yes, she is blunt, but such is truth.

>>140875850
In my opinion Social Darwinism is completely fucking illogical and retarded due to there being no evolutionary pressures in society, so using that to justify Mumei's behavior seems kind of dumb to me. I get where you are coming from in a base "me strong, you weak" type mindset, but she's clearly seen these "weak" people willingly throw themselves to the kabane to but the others time. They may lack the power to make their wills to protect manifest, but true strength goes far beyond raw killing power. There's a reason humans are one of the weaker species in terms of size to strength ratios, yet still rule the planet and are over 7 billion strong. It's NOT because we were able to bludgeon the other animals into submission.

At no point here has Mumei actually been tested in a deadly situation. Every time she's faced the kabane, there was never any danger for her to actually die. Even if she was bitten, there's no danger of turning. That's not strength, she couldn't lose even if she tried due to her own biology, so it's the equivalent of a boxing match for her.

gotta agree with this one, the "driving a train/tricking humans" thing is coincidental, if a train is going full bore and everyone dies/gets infected it's gonna keep going until it hits something or runs out of fuel (chances are the first one, the conductor died while his arm was still caught in the pull loop on the train whistle, and they were all infected passing through another station on their way there, probably attacked like the other train was.

But, this isn't a horse carriage where they horses will walk without any input, this requires a significant degree of cooperation and effort to keep the train going. More than that, the kabane use the train whistle to signal the station before they get there to trick them into lowering the drawbridge, allowing them to get in. There way too much coincidence to just write it off as "they just turned into zombies in the perfect positions".

>But, this isn't a horse carriage where they horses will walk without any input, this requires a significant degree of cooperation and effort to keep the train going.

As long as the brakes are off and there's water and coal in the engine, the train is going to go forwards. Obviously it will lose momentum and stop as the coal burns out and the water evaporates, but assuming the train was taken over recently it should have enough momentum to get to its destination.

>More than that, the kabane use the train whistle to signal the station before they get there to trick them into lowering the drawbridge, allowing them to get in.

Coincidence, a dead man's hand was attached to the whistle pull. Alternatively, some panicking retard who's still alive in the control cabin is still following "all-clear" procedures despite being obviously not "all-clear."

I have to agree. If you rewatch the scene in episode one, pic related seems very deliberate, especially considering how close they were to the station. Well at that point we're just straight up speculating off when the train was taken. I still find the horns far too conveniently timed to be coincidence myself. Everything is speculation until more evidence is revealed to support either hypothesis. As it stands I don't think there's anything that solidly disproves either argument, since I don't think we're in the "enough coincidences to be a pattern" zone yet.
>>
>>140877872
>I still find the horns far too conveniently timed to be coincidence myself.

Are you only 'pretending'?

Rewatch the shot about the train. The zombies were eating people, not conducting the train. Let's that sink down a moment.

The zombies were not conducting the train. They were busy eating people. They were not showing any kind of intelligence. They weren't twirling their moustache while saying 'All according to the plans boys'. They were only mindlessly eating everyone on board, which just happened to sound the horn.

If you didn't understand something so simple and obvious, then everything you said since the beginning is automatically invalidated by virtue of you proving yourself to be a moron. You can't hope to be taken seriously if you are unable to get something so simple and obvious.
>>
>>140878353
>Everything is speculation until more evidence is revealed to support either hypothesis

But they actually show the zombie pushing the dude to pull the whistle, and it does it twice at the right times. I guess it really is up to your interpretation of the scene so I won't say you're wrong by any means, but I still feel like there is more evidence towards my interpretation given further actions by the kabane that demonstrate a remarkable level of intelligence. But like you said, neither is ironclad, so I guess I shouldn't be such a sperg about it.

>>140878367
But it's been made pretty clear that zombies don't eat people like traditional zombies. They'll bite and kill them, but after they're dead they move on. Their goal is turning, not feeding, as demonstrated by virtually every Kabane having a remarkably intact body, and the zombies leaving after a person has been bitten and killed.

>If you didn't understand something so simple and obvious, then everything you said since the beginning is automatically invalidated by virtue of you proving yourself to be a moron.

they feed off blood
>>
>>140878471

>But they actually show the zombie pushing the dude to pull the whistle, and it does it twice at the right times.

If the zombie was truly intelligent they'd have pulled the chain themselves instead of ambiguously humping the guy who's loosely attached to the chain. I mean maybe they have some modicum of intelligence given you need some to actually function at all (basic principles of finding and hunting prey, for example), but I don't think there's enough evidence to prove that it is above stereotypical zombie levels yet.

I mean if they could figure out timing and (cause and effect) patterns they should be way more fucking dangerous than they're presented as.
>>
Bloody hell, the kabane got fucking destroyed.

What if Mumei eats the baby for its blood as a curveball for the show? I forget the scene but wasn't just the mother infected? Do you think her baby is also a zombie and will pop out of her belly alien style? So much could happen in ep4, I don't want to wait a week.
>>
>>140878779
Well, at no point have I said they were truly intelligent to the level of a human. I think it's more like an animalistic intelligence, in which they can observe and learn, and use some non linear thinking, but still can't match human thinking or critical thinking. If they could then they wouldn't get outsmarted by a fucking moat of all things. I've heard this referred to as "low cunning", in that they aren't just dumb one track robots, but still couldn't ever match a human. The only reason this level of intelligence works is because human underestimate the kabane and think they are mindless monsters; if the humans realized the kabane were like fairly intelligent animals and treated them as such then they wouldn't be so taken surprise when the kabane don't act like morons.

I mean, if cats can use and flush toilets and snakes can open fucking doors, then I don't find the not-zombies figuring out fairly simple functions to be that much of a stretch of imagination even if they can't figure out all cause and effect scenarios like you say.. This is even more true if they have some kind of loose hive mind that's been implied through them flipping out when a Kabane dies, or them suddenly going ape and launching at the escaping train.

>Well, at no point have I said they were truly intelligent to the level of a human.

Oh, okay now that we're clear on this point I think I get your position more. Assuming animal level intelligence (which isn't a stretch, given basic hunting instincts) I think the real question for me is "could a dog figure out you need to pull this particular string twice at a certain time to open the gate so they can get into a fortress and convert/feed on dudes?"

I can see an animal figuring out that trains can go into fortresses, and maybe that the train makes a noise to make the door open from merely observing these interactions from the outside. However, I doubt the ability to deduce which mechanism in the train operates the whistle, since they couldn't see that mechanism from the outside. At this point it's pure coincidence that the conductor/engineer died with their hand attached to the whistle chain that enabled the gates to open.

>This is even more true if they have some kind of loose hive mind that's been implied through them flipping out when a Kabane dies, or them suddenly going ape and launching at the escaping train.

I don't think that implies that they have a hive mind, more that they might have empathy for one of their own in the first case (typical for pack animals), and an understanding that their prey is about to escape in the second case (again, typical for non-hive animals, most know when the situation is no longer in their favor).

What?

>>140879232
Honestly, I'm not sure about dogs specifcally, but I know that animals such as crows and octopi have been able to make some impressive leaps in thinking that most animals wouldn't even fathom. For example, I remember reading one story where a crow received a straight wire, and bent said wire in order to unlatch a lock to food that it's beak was too big to get to. Not only did the crow have to conceptualize that the latch was keeping it from the food, but it had to have the thought process to realize that it could use a tool to get to the latch that its body couldn't reach. In another case, and octopi that had been escaping had the lid to its tank replaced with an electronically locked one. After some trial and error, the fucking octopi spit water at a light fixture, which blew the fuse and let the octopi push open the now useless lock to escape. If the kabane could match the level of an animal with a malicious intent towards humans, it would be pretty damned effective I think.

>However, I doubt the ability to deduce which mechanism in the train operates the whistle

Well, this could go one of two ways. Either A) the zombies have some sort of hive mind, in which what one learns is learned by others, in which case it would make sense that some kabane somewhere would figure out the whistle/chain connection. Either that, or while feeding, the kabane realized that pulling the chain started the whistle, and the kabane exploited that to trick the station to get past the moat. But you're right that I am just speculating hard at this point, I shouldn't have been so sure of my own idea.

>I don't think that implies that they have a hive mind, more that they might have empathy for one of their own in the first case (typical for pack animals)

>trump
>running as republican
>not republican

Trump's views are too ideologically scattered to make him a "true" Republican of any type. He has several platforms that run contrary to core Republican orthodoxy, such as being anti-free trade. Simultaneously, he holds too many conservative views to be viewed as a Democrat, despite having agreed with many of their positions in the past. In essence, he belongs with neither party, and is trying to overwrite the ideals of one party to suit his needs (which is why you see the huge pushback with party regulars, they don't see much general election merit in his changes, in fact many of them run counter to their post-2012 recommendations to win the next presidential election).

>Shit, I should just lurk more and stop pretending like I can predict shows.

I haven't even watched this show yet, I'm arguing entirely based on evidence presented in this thread and others. Probably going to pick this up given the so far generally positive response here.
>>
>>140879912
Just because the walking meme is mentally incapable of having a coherent platform doesn't mean he isn't a Republican. He is running as one, he's appealing to them, and he constantly spouts far right rhetoric. Even if you like him, denying obvious facts makes me worry for you. He may be anti free trade, but the accepted Republican philosophy only pays lip service to free trade. It's far more corporatist than anything, and that's what Trump made his fortune on. Free trade would have left him drowning in debts and failed ventures, rather than being able to recoup with bankruptcy to float to the top. He may diverge in some way from the norm, but on his red meat issues, and his voting base, he's undeniably Republican. McCain was much the same way, in that he actually had some novel opinions, but at the end of the day towed the party line without fail. I can understand why people like him, but arguing that he's not Republican seems really bizarre to me. I figured the other party members pushed back against him because he's said some straight up stupid shit (the content may have not been stupid, but the delivery certainly was), and don't want him associated with the Republican party.

>Probably going to pick this up given the so far generally positive response here.

>He is running as one, he's appealing to them, and he constantly spouts far right rhetoric.

Just trying to explain what I think the logic behind the image probably is. His opinions are definitely in the Republican's wheelhouse, it's just that it's sufficiently uncomfortable for them that they don't want to actually label him as such. Plus you have the fact he was way more left wing a decade ago makes him seem way more like a force from outside the party...

...It just occurred to me that the image is probably also trying to play up his "outsider" image, as appearing like a hostile takeover of the Republican party plays into his image as the strongman winner.

>I figured the other party members pushed back against him because he's said some straight up stupid shit (the content may have not been stupid, but the delivery certainly was), and don't want him associated with the Republican party.

Which is another way of saying that he's changing the Republican party in a way they don't want, because it would most likely be fatal in a general election. The Republican party, as part of their post-2012 autopsy, has been trying to look less like the "racist rich white boy" party to fit with the changing demographics of the voterbase, but Trump is playing right into the hands of the opposition by painting them as such.

>back on topic

I'm always late to the party every season because I use this board to aggregate opinions and figure out which shows I'd enjoy versus the ones that would have zero appeal to me. This show was one of those borderline cases where I wasn't sure if this was the type of show I could enjoy, but given what I've seen here it's probably in the former category.

Why is the boiler at the rear of the train and not actually part of the locomotive? Is it fuelled by kabane? Remember this is SnK 2

Why is water being used as a "coolant"? Steam engines don't use water as coolant, they use it to make the steam. No, I don't have a snappy explanation for that one.

>Why is the boiler at the rear of the train and not actually part of the locomotive?

Because it was probably built at the beginning of the kabane shitstorm, and it's too late to fix basic design problems at this point.

>Why is water being used as a "coolant"? Steam engines don't use water as coolant, they use it to make the steam

It might be a mistranslation, or it might be a different kind of tech than we know. Either is pretty likely.

episode 4 when?

Ok, then we probably don't know enough about the fucking train. Either that or the person who wrote that didn't know enough. Either way, does it really matter?

I have to say this scene was pretty cute.

I don't think a vaccine at this point will do much good. Your current population becomes immune, but they will still get ripped apart by the existing Kabane in combat. And it seems like they are everywhere.

I think whatever research they are doing will somehow result in some serious macguffin superweapon that will magically wipe out all Kabane.
>>
>>140880939
I think coolant is a correct term? It is used to collect the heat from the fuel reaction and transfer the energy to whatever you want to use it for.
>>
>That piano at the end when sit was going down
I love this show. I wonder what's up with that rock though? If it hurts mumei then it must have some kind of anti-kabane magic on it or something.

Not so easy, the umbilical barrier is very thought for antigens to pass.

For instance, HIV can't get through it.

>Jaded and tired of this shit is a possibility too, if she is vastly older than she looks due to plot virus.
The virus only appeared 20 years before the anime.

She's not older than 32.

There's probably a fair chance that she's a time traveller too and pissed that everyone is ignoring her, given of course who is writing this.

That would be a shit cliffhanger ending though. It would have no closure at all.

The LN version, yeah. Kabaneri is based on a series of actual novels with a different name.
>>
So do habaneros need human blood strictly or would animal be fine as well?

Also do they even have animals or did kabane eat them all?

Mumei's also requires you to be in direct contact with them. I imagine their rifles would have similar effects at such range

No cutie Fujika to cook and pour my tea while I clean my rifle and fix the train.

During that point tactless.

You don't fucking ask someone's recently deceased if they were fucking them, especially during a funeral procession.
