Later that morning, you're sitting around the Christmas Tree with Lise's parents. Mr. Hohenstein is pretty pleased with the antique Prussian solid gold fountain pen you and Lise got for him, which in the name of due dilligence, you already examined carefully to make sure that it really was in fact just a pen and nothing more.

"This is amazing! where did you ever find it?"

You and Lise look at one another and giggle.

"We just sort of came across it one day."

You're pretty confident that Mr. Hohenstein isn't going to be seen in public with a fountain pen of all things, and thankfully, the only other person who would recognize that pen no longer has eyes According to the news, he is set to get a face transplant, so at least things are turning out ok for him as well. Lise hands you a long, tube shaped package. You can't imagine what's inside of it, though you assume that she has a modicum of discretion that would prevent her from giving you anything too embarrassing, at least in front of her parents, You tear an end off the wrapping paper, and slide out a pair of rods with a piece of cloth wrapped around them. It appears to be a Japanese wall scroll.

"Oh, no. You didn't."

"I did. I got it for free at one of the events for performing."

You bite your lower lip. You've always wanted one of these, but you missed the release and couldn't justify paying auction house prices. You unwrap the scroll, and unroll it. It's glorious. Obviously, it can't compete with the genuine article, but it still has a beauty all of it's own. Lise grins.

"I thought you'd like it, you can put it with that figure."

Her parent's look up, "Figure? What's a figure?"

"Don't worry about it. I'll explain it later."

You aren't sure if the new running outfit you have waiting for her in another wrapped box can really compete with what she just gave you, but it's OK, because it's not a competition. With the pants you picked out for her, it's really going to be a gift for you, too.

Official Schwarzesmarken soundtrack by Roger Waters of Pink Floyd is THE soundtrack, comrades.
He`s now working on his next album about interdimensional matress travel - when he`s not busy calling out the jew.

Also, commissar Gretel and Martin were lucky to attend to the last concert of the Puhdys https://youtu.be/7FCWNS02jP4

But you can't forget the classics

Why did East Germany build T-64's when they could have built almost 3 T-62's for the price of one T-64?

The T-64 was also more expensive to maintain and field then the T-62 and it is questionable if the 125mm has significantly more power then the 115 that it would justify the cost so why?

Cause it's better? or it has capabilities that make it better at something else.

By your logic, in real life, why did the US build a bunch of F-15s when they could've had 2 A-10s for the price? A F-15E Strike Eagle goes/went for 36 million a piece, an A-10 is 20 million last I checked. And that is without getting into specialized equipment for the exact same planes, the Silent Eagle version of the F-15 goes for 105 million a piece.

The answer is that the F-15 is better. the A-10 is a plane suited for a very specific role while the F-15 can be adapted to a multitude of different situations and still be a perfectly good ground-attack aircraft.

So if it bothers you that much, assume that it's better. Even if it isn't.

>So if it bothers you that much, assume that it's better. Even if it isn't.
That's the problem.

The advantages the T-64BV have over the T-72 obr 1972 are mostly lost.

The low profile. the laminate armor is completely useless due to the BETA not using any conventional weaponry and the laser class being able to destroy the vehicle regardless of the armor.

The mobility advantage is mostly rendered moot due to the fact that the tanks are in most cases used in dug in position and rarely used in offensive maneuver warfare. They also fire while being stationary so the stabiliser difference is rarely relevent and also the that the BETA are more then barn sized targets so that even a lousy T-34/85 obr 1969 has a good chance to hit a BETA.

Both the 125mm and 115 can destroy targets beyond their effective aimed range and both are of limited use on the frontal arch of a Destroyer-class. Even the T-64's small advantage in that the commander has a remote HMG that he can operate inside the vehicle is gone because not a single T-64 was seen with a NSVT.

With all that said the T-64 is more expensive to produce, costly to operate and strains the logistic due to having more weight and complex parts to replace.

And your comparision with the F-15 and A-10 is lacking. One is a multirole plane while the other is a low and slow ground attacker.

The T-62 and T-64 are both main battle tanks and do the same job.

Soviet fleet and strategic bombers are going to be a non-factor, at least for the first couple of days.

The big question on the naval front is whether or not the Backfires can engage and disable or destroy whichever Carrier Task Force is on station in the North Sea region. How this shakes out depends a lot on what triggered the conflict; if the USSR manged to achieve some level of strategic surprise and thus had a significant number of its bombers arrayed against one CTF, they could probably do it. Then the Soviet fleet can enter the equation.

Conversely, If the U.S. (and NATO) had more naval assets in the area, the bombers have an increasingly more difficult task. The odds that enough of the Backfires survive long enough to get off the number of missiles needed to overwhelm the Ticonderoga/Arleigh Burke Aegis vessels plummets and the Soviet surface fleet becomes a 'Fleet In Being' threat for the duration.

You underestimate the sheer amount of them. Plus they are guaranteed to come with completely crazy ECM, it`s their only defence aside from whatever fighters even have the range for escort.
>>
>>140860854

I think the larger problem is that they retired the Phoenix without a replacement (or a modernization block). The ability of an 1986 F-14 to carry six missiles with ~200 km range is a big part of what makes a Tu-95 carrying Shipwrecks with ~625 km range a fairly minor threat.

>>140860894
>Plus it will be damn hard to catch all of the fleet in harbor.

The surface combatants that aren't in the harbor get to join the submarine service, though.

>>140860987

The whole production run was only ~500 aircraft, and the odds of getting all of them in one place without being noticed and precautions taken are... low.

>surface combatants
Depends on the type of surface combatant. Big guys will certainly bite back, plus your first attack will trigger a total war anyway.

>~500 aircraft
But long range would allow soviets to commit a lot of 95s from very distant airfields. You don`t have to start from Murmansk only, crews from Engels and maybe even Ukraine can join in.
>>
>>140861538
>You don`t have to start from Murmansk only, crews from Engels and maybe even Ukraine can join in

They need to be more-or-less synchronized for arrival, though; you can't give the interceptors a chance to even partially refuel and rearm. As easy as that might sound, one of the fundamental principals of war is that everything is FAR harder than it sounds.

When you add in the possible threat of ground-based interceptors against planes flying from as far south-east as Ukraine or Engels, the timing becomes a bit trickier.

>Depends on the type of surface combatant. Big guys will certainly bite back, plus your first attack will trigger a total war anyway.

And the situation, and what's in the neighborhood. The 'd-trackers' who were supposed to try and shadow the carrier groups only had one challenge after the war started, that being 'survive long enough to radio Moscow'.

The Kiev-class and Kirov-class would be tough cookies, but one would have to wonder whether or not Soviet High Command would put them in a position that would place them at a high probability of being lost when they were starting the war.

>In ideal conditions only. Remember the insane ECM.

Poor conditions cut both ways, though. Making a missile find its way to a target ~300 miles away on its own isn't exactly easy.

I'm also having trouble finding any information on the 95's ECM ability; I assume the would have added some at some point after the 1950 launch, but I'm not seeing much. Of course, ECM is pretty difficult to quanitize.

>Still was a great missile, of course.

It also seems somewhat unique - I'm not aware of any other deployed air-to-air missile in the same range bracket.

Apparently, there was some consideration given to a 'Sea Phoenix', which would have been a ship-launched version. If you gave it the sort of upgrades that resulted in the current ESSM, that could have come in handy.
>Still was a great missile, of course.
>>
>>140862321
There are special naval ECM variants of 95 built specifically to escort bomber formations. Goddamn thing is so huge you can put a really powerful emitter inside to just hammer the airwaves, that`s why it will be hard for interceptors to work from long ranges. Ships will be trickier, since their radar energy output is of course much greater.

Phoenix has its spuritual successor in russian R-33/37 series, which was a sort of an answer to it in the first place. There is also talk about some new thing with completely crazy range specifically to target awacses from standoff called KS-172, but no concrete information on how far it really developed yet. Still, 400km ideal ranges, holy shit.

Anon you have to understand economics and practical needs. There is no reason to build tanks, whom are lacking in BETA warfare and then try to talk about how they would be used against NATO when your very existance is important for NATO.

Then there is the whole "how many AFV can I field"

For the cost of building 100 T-64s I can build 300 T-62s. Meaning I can put 3 times as many tanks on the battlefield. It also means I can do manouver warfare and so on and be more aggresive since I have more tanks which allows me to do such things which otherwise woud be limited since I only have 100 tanks instead of 300.

An amusing tidbit on the bomber topic, from a Soviet Naval Aviator (MRA, I believe):

>A young second lieutenant, a backfire WSO fresh from the air college, asked the senior navigator of the regiment, an old major: “sir, tell me why we have a detailed flight plan to the target over the vast ocean, but only a rough dot-and-dash line across Hokkaido Island on way back?”

>"Son,” answered the major calmly, “if your crew manages to get the plane back out of the sky over the carrier by any means, on half a wing broken by a Phoenix and a screaming prayer, no matter whether it’s somewhere over Hokkaido or directly through the moon, it’ll be the greatest possible thing in your entire life!"

I see you guys are going back on forth on Sovietwank and the uberleet Soviet missiles and I'd hate to interrupt, but both sides didn't say to activate all nuclear weapons in full scale war in Europe, especially in the latter stages of the Cold War. By constast, weapon types like tactical nuclear weapons even were heavily restricted.

Also, Sweden doesn't necessarily automatically die. Now what follows is scuttlebutt I've heard from certain people combined with analysis and leaks of foreign policy stuff, but Sweden and Finland aren't actually neutral. Well in the modern day, they are more now. But during the CW, Sweden and Finland (or at least certainly the former) would join NATO, since the war would open on their fronts anyways, and we all agreed and anticipated that the Soviets would either demand subservience or war when that time came, and for sure try to seize Gotland. With Gotland, the balance of power in the Baltic Sea shifts drastically. Little did we know, but Soviet doctrine likewise called for an invasion of Sweden and Finland.

The reason it wasn't public is because Sweden and Finland's relations to each other, and to the wider world, and their publics at the time. But rest assured, Sweden is and has designed their stuff for interoperability with NATO, and they only ever practiced thwarting the Soviets.

The Anti-Ship Ballistic Missiles are probably less of a threat than usually assumed to be, because there are a lot of fundamental problems with guidance on a re-entry vehicle and because the Standard 3 Block IIA is fully capable of engaging orbital and suborbital targets.

On the other hand, there are a lot of scenarios where they could use land-based sea skimmers, which removes the window of opportunity to kill the bombers.

You have no idea about how naval warfare, or even air warfare is conducted, do you?

Numbers don't mean anything, when it's interception system's warheads are cheaper than your missiles, it's radar far superior to anything available in your arsenal, and there being a lot of them.

Or forgetting the massive superiority of American CAP. Forget ALL of that!

How the hell do you think you're gonna find the fleet anyways?

I'll give you a small hint. Soviet naval strategy was only ever focused on denial (for as long as they could anyways) against American, and the wider NATO fleet. They never, ever seriously enviosoned their navy could attempt to take even one CBG in a head to head battle. Their attempts to procude even one equivalent of a carrier battle group was too high for the Soviet economy and still keeping to their other commitments, even at it's height.

By the end of the CW, Soviet command didn't think their navy would last very long. They figured even the army would lose eventually, it's gains reversed. Why do you think they invested so heavily in a missile force? Why do you think even with the collapse of the USSR, the nuclear missiles still got the top priority? It's because the Soviets would lose and they knew it. Even now, Putin and company still knows it. Hence why you see threats of nuclear retaliation if their neighbors so much as sneeze. It's their only card they truly have left, and they fucking know it.

I'd put more money on the Chinese conventional warfare capabilities at this point than Russian. I'm not saying Russians are pathetic African-tier military now. But in a sense, they never were what our popular imagination led us to think.

As you go through the morning, you eventually realize that Lise is doing her 'I don't want to be thrown away again' clingy routine where she tries to stay in constant physical contact with you at times. Well, fine. You choose to just let it slide, though it does make it more difficult to get up and get presents, and it is a little bit awkward considering her parents happen to be in the same room as you at the time. Still, you get it. This can be another Christmas present. After the presents are opened, and you have a belly full of homemade pastries and eggnog and scotch, you drift off to sleep on the couch, with your arm wrapped around the tiny girl. The scene is almost perfect, when you turn on the television and switch it to the golf channel, which is showing a charity tournament that is taking place in New Zealand. Now, you're really ready to nap. Around noon, Beatrix and Jurgen arrive with the baby. Everyone is supposed to meet at about one, but they had to bring over some of the things Mrs. Hohenstein baked that she couldn't carry on foot, and some extra chairs so everyone has a place to sit down. Eventually, The three of them are dozing along side you on the couch, with Beatrix's hand squeezing Lise's.

Mr. Hohenstein is sitting at the table tapping away at his laptop, doing some last minute revisions to a story that he'd like to have out the door by new year's. Walther and Slywia, then Inghild, the baby and Marco, each arrive, with Walther and Marco heading out to get the barbecue started. There are too many dishes being brought into the house right now, and many of them need to be kept warm until dinner, so that instead of cooking the roast in the oven, it's being made in on the barbecue. The grill has been lifted up and removed entirely, and the roast is stitting in a deep pan, surrounded by the coals and chunks of applewood that are succeeding in giving it a smokey, hardy flavor.

REMOVE COMMUNIST!
>>
>>140872049

You stir awake as Pham and Farka enter the house, followed by Iris and Theo. Theo has his arm around Iris as he helps her through the door. She looks like she tore something. You think for a moment, and realize that she probably did, and it wasn't a muscle. Theo helps Iris into a folding chair, then takes a glance around the room. He looks aghast and confused when he sees Lise and Beatrix napping on top of each other, holding hands. There are some gears turning in his head, but it's obvious they're missing some teeth. You decide to head off any potential problems before they start.

"Merry Christmas, Theo."

"Hello."

You use your free hand to motion to the two girls.

"I don't want to talk about this kind of stuff on Christmas, so I'll keep it quick. They're actually best friends. It's OK. When Beatrix recruited Lise into the Werewolves, it was more like she rescued her from a lot of people who were a lot worse."

"How do you know this?"

"I read about it on the internet."

Theo looks flustered. He's only been here a day, and he still doesn't know what most things are, The internet, cell phones, credit cards, or why every store has a sticker with a lowercase 'F' on the door.

"The Internet?"

"It's a place on the computer with an endless supply of cat videos, gossip, and fetish porn."

"How would that teach you anything about the world I came from?"

"Well, it has everything else on it, too. Do you want me to show you the internet?"

You switch the input on the television from cable to the media center PC you keep in the living room, then bring up an internet browser. Wireless keyboard in your lap, you show Theo all the important parts of the internet. At least, all the important parts of the internet you can show him with small children and your Fiance's parents in the room. For someone whose closest encounter with the internet is redacted newspaper microfilms, it's like a whole new world.

Theo pulls up a folding chair next you your end of the couch, and you start showing him highlights of the internet. eventually, you decide to show him the video where Lise and Beatrix pretend to be themselves, and shoot an old Type 38 Arisaka at BETA posters in a rock quarry.

"What the heck? What language are they speaking?"

"Japanese."

"What? Why would they make a video in Japanese?"

Theo is comfortably in murmuring range, and while Lise is slumped on your shoulder, she hasn't stirred this entire time. You quietly explain how everything about his world was known in this one through a fictional series, and how his sister wanted to see him again so badly, she'd built this entire brand of cosplay, carefully studying her audience, figuring out how to maximize her impact, and eventually getting able to meet the creators. You tell Theo how his own death had never been resolved, and how, without knowing how he died, it would be impossible to allow him to cross over to this world, and that her only objective in doing all of this was to see her brother again. You tell him about how her original plan was to simply commit suicide in the hopes she was able to meet him again, how Beatrix made sure she couldn't, and how everyone encouraged this and cooperated with her because it was the only constructive outlet for her crippling loneliness. You touch on the fact that she did all of this with only the goal of seeing her beloved brother again, and then casually mention that the first thing he did after almost a year and a half of hard work on her part was to immediately snub her in favor of another woman. That even if there wasn't any romantic attraction, that this sort of thing hurts, because she misses her brother so much. Theo is pretty dense, but by the end of it, you're pretty sure he's got the picture. His forehead is resting in his hands, his elbows on his knees.

"I'm a terrible brother, aren't I?"

"The important thing is you admit you have a problem."

You gently push Lise into Beatrix, so they're napping propped up against one another, and you take Theo outside. You reach into a cooler and hand him a beer, before getting one for yourself. Instead of ice, the cooler is full of snow from the lawn outside. The mood is awkward, to say the least. You speak first.

"Thanks."

Theo looks confused.

"To be honest, if you had come into this world all gung-ho on Lise, my relationship would have fallen apart by now. So, it's fine with me if that's not what you're after. In fact, it's better for me. A lot better for me. But... don't forget about her. She did do all that work, just for you. Remember, after all is said and done, you're her brother. That's all you need to be."

Theo nods, sipping on his beer. It must taste funny, because after his first sip he scrutinizes the label, giving it a sour look.

"What is this?"

"It's an India Pale Ale."

"It's a little bit strong..."

"It's Pham's favorite. Take small sips and try to savor the aroma."

Actually, that's true. Pham has always enjoyed things with floral notes, and managed to appreciate the sweet side of things that other people just find too bitter to give a chance. Theo looks at the beer, and takes another sip, trying to force himself to appreciate it. You return to the task at hand, getting him to adapt to this new world.

"Also, I know you were never on the best of terms with Beatrix, but it's important that you try to give her a second chance. She's basically a totally different person here than who you thought she was in the bad old days. Also, she's married to Iris' brother, and her two best friends are Iris and Lise, so you are basically going to have to get along with her if you want to be close to any of the people you love. Your parent's are treating her baby as their own grandchild, and helping it raise it as one of their own. So, if you remember nothing else from today, just remember, Beatrix Bernhard is your friend now."

"You don't seem to trust me."

"Sorry, I don't. When Lise saw Walther and Sylvia, she had a panic attack and crawled out a window, trying to run away from them in only her pyjamas and stocking feet. When she saw Pham, she was crying because she felt so bad. When you saw Beatrix, I wasn't so sure that you weren't going to stab her again. Neither was she, that's why she left so abruptly."

Theo looks down at his beer. You can't tell if he feels bad or not. After all, everything you know about this man has him painted as a monster. A monster whose downfall should no doubt be looked upon with understanding and sympathy, but a monster all the same. Even now, you have Schmidt's Walther Model 9 in a special holster in your front pocket, because getting stabbed sucks.

"I don't remember how I died."

Theo addresses you, seemingly out of nowhere.

"I managed to stay alive for a while, fighting for what I thought was right, but when I died, I was blind drunk. I don't even remember dying. I wouldn't have even known if Pham hadn't told me."

"You mean the fact that she was even here didn't tell you?"

"No, I saw her in my dreams all the time. I saw them all in my dreams."

He stares into his drink. You finish your own beer, and grab another one. Before you take a sip, you hold it out towards him.

"A toast... to friendship."

"...To friendship."

For the first time since you've seen him, Theo smiles. The smell of roasting meat wafts through the air, when Lise pokes her head through the door.

"Come on in, it's time to exchange presents. Also, get me a beer."

You head back inside. Between the Christmas tree and the fourteen people (including the two babies) in the room, things are rather cozy. You're back on the couch, with Lise on your lap, drinking her beer. You eventually begin the process of handing out presents to everyone and watching them open them one by one. It's pretty fun to see what everyone thought the other people they love would want in their lives, Eventually, you get to the part where Theo is given a gift from his family. It's a fairly basic smartphone, and they already set it up for him in the store.

"This way everyone can get a hold of you."

"What... I mean... What is this thing?"

You chime in, "It's basically every electronic device you could ever possibly imagine. Except radar."

Mrs. Hohenstein calls him on her own phone, and her husband shows her son how to answer the call. Lise takes a picture of the scene, and sends it to him.

"It says I have a message. What's a message?"

His father shows him how to open the messaging application and enlarge the picture. Theo realizes that the picture was taken only a moment ago, and looks confused.

"We don't actually use film anymore, so there's nothing to develop."

"I... This could be used to spy on people."

"It is used to spy on people. but it's not a problem because there is so much information being put out there that parsing it is going to be an impossible task. And the people who would be spying on you are way too busy staring at the fourteen year old titties that get sent over these messages to ever care about anything you upload."

You're greeted with a room full of blank stares. Theo answers, "That's not reassuring at all."

"It's not meant to be. It's just the truth. Take from it what you will. But expect to get lots of pictures of food, flowers, and baby animals."

Theo stares at the phone in his hands, not sure of what to think.

"Also, you can look at the internet on that thing."

He looks up, "I can?"

With all the presents opened, It's time for Christmas dinner. Everyone helps to load the kitchen table with all of the food they have brought, but before you start loading your plate, Iris has you form a circle holding hands in the living room for a short prayer. You spare a moment for friends lost, give thanks for friends found, and also the delicious food you can smell on the table. Then, Walther carves the Christmas roast, and everybody forms a line, loading their plates. You try to get a little bit of everything. It's hard not to overfill your plate, and you settle with a couple bites of everything. By the time you make it around the table, however, your plate is completely overloaded. You sit back down on the cough, and tuck into the meal. By this point, everybody is laughing and joking again, even Theo, who took it upon himself to cycle through the line twice, bringing Iris her plate. She managed to stand for Grace, but other hther than that, she has not gotten out of her chair the entire time she's been here. Lise turns to you and smirks, whispering "I bet she's having trouble walking. The first time is always hard."

You try not to spit out the mouthful of pork you were chewing, and instead swallow hard. You look over at her, but she's returned to her own plate, pretending that nothing happened. You finish your meal, and eventually, everyone leaves. You were eating on paper plates, so clean up is relatively easy. You get ready to turn in. You and Lise have a quick shower, with no soap, just to rinse the day off. As the stress and uncertainty of the day runs down the drain with the steaming water, Lise wraps you in a loving embrace.

"I heard all the things you told him on the couch."

She puts a light kiss on your chest, and looks up at you.

"I could never have told him all that myself. I'm glad you did it for me."

She smiles happily. It's the sort of unburdened, joyous smile you've become addicted to.

"I think you deserve a reward tonight."
