Depth of Character:
Subaru became a NEET is due to the fact he cannot be a better man than his father in any way and hates the fact that he can't. The equivalent of a living hero. Subaru does use his overly positive personality to hide is crippling depression but its more of a choice. He likes to cling onto things that makes him less numb inside.
The usually the main driving force behind his stupid decisions and why he saved Emilia in the first place.
That's just the MC for the first and second arc.
There are some characters you will absolutely hate at the start and grow to love as the series goes on.
Story:
Let me make myself clear, its not a Shounen.
Its mostly a murder mystery, while there are fights its not the main focus of the series, the conflict isn't mostly about him vs the world or him vs himself. Even the second arc most anons didn't find out that behind all of his troubles that the incident was due to a bite. Not only did it make the most sense it also ties to alot of other shit later on. Not to mention the series has alot of "you have got to be kidding me" moments.
This is only for the first and second arc as well.
Most of his conclits are around his character development and how to improve and adapt to a situation, there will be times where he has to come to term with himself, time where he has to move on and times where he loses it completely. "He dies a lot in time loops" isn't the main focus of this series, more about finding the reasons to why he is there and why he got such a power. The with every answer comes more questions.
While the "suffering porn" part is somewhat true, its the good kind of suffering porn, because you want to see MC succeed not to mention you get sucked into it that you just keep going at it to see how everything works out and connects.

For one, he was never once angsty in the series, only giddy to the point of cringe. I've read 410+ chapters of this and I have never EVER seen him be an angsty teenager.

Like I said, no substance since they just come back anyways. And no, "muh mental stress!" is about as serious as oniisama feeling everyone's pain when he brings them back to life.
