Maybe I'm being impatient but someone on /a/ sold this as a good berserk replacement but it is total shit and completely lacks any soul or character.

I watched it to the end, and my immediate thought was "Well, it was good enough that i feel my time wasnt wasted, but i dont think ill revisit this at any point." Its very middle of the pack for me. I remember liking Claire a lot and I liked that she was set up as the absolute weakest claymore aside from that power shit i dont really remember. Id watch it anon, but its certainly no Berserk.

Haha what? Who the fuck told you that? The Claymore manga was a decent enough ride, really good in some parts and weaker in others but overall decent, didn't ever let powerlevels get too out of hand, and actually fucking finished rather then go on for fucking ever which is nice. It was definitely not Berserk though.
The adaption was ok in parts but goes animu original at the end in a bad way. FWIW it does get stronger past ep 3, the problem is that it nose dives in the finale. So I'd recommend you maybe watch through ep 9 or 10 or something if you want and otherwise just read the manga.

There are definitely exceptions, particularly when it comes to 2cour shows (though I can think of at least one example even with just 13 eps) where it takes more like 5 eps to get going and ends up being fucking awesome anyway, so I don't blame anyone for double checking. You're right though that usually 3 eps will do it.
