What annoyed me is that he was presented as this savage hunter but he never did anything proactive. He just sat around waiting for people to come and fight him. That's what Itagaki seems to be trying to amend/remedy with this series. People *can* die. There is actually the possibility of major, beloved cast members being killed now.

He escaped. The vote was to determine whether or not they should put him back in the ice that he came out of in the first place. Being Baki-stronk, he obviously avoided that fate. Presumably Goroukou managed to cover it up or somehow skew the story presented to the public, as the reporters and papers that discuss Pickle in the river make no mention whatsoever of that plan.

I dunno about that, but fact is that foreigners like, for example, Muslims, likened the European knights to wild animals and not to humans. According to the historic sources from Islamic countries, European knights were as strong and fearless as lions or wild boars and were completely unmatched by mere humans - however, the muzzies were convinced that their better tactics and knowledge of the terrain would lead the to victory, even though in single combat, the knights were seen as invincible.

It's not particularly formal. He tends to use less common words and phrasings decently often, and he's kinda unfamiliar with modern words or loanwords. A lot of instances of his speech and internal voice use alternative kanji related to the sword, and he occasionally pulls out neologisms. He tends to use proper honorifics (Tokugawa-dono, Hanma-san, etc), but doesn't formalize verbs or sentences. He's generally rough, but not in a full-blown Yuujiro way. I think the best equivalency I can think of is how you would imagine your average DM in a Dungeons and Dragons game narrating events. Filled with your stereotypical "thee"s and "thine"s, but not too much in the way of realistic old speech.
However, with Chapter 86, we actually had to change quite a bit of the text to something that could be pragmatically conveyed in English. Therein, old Musashi talks about calligraphic styles in a rather bizarre way that we couldn't quite make work in English without a million footnotes.
So all-in-all, he's written to be someone linguistically skilled who intentionally tries to use the vernacular to sound more normal than he really is.

We don't really need to look up words unless they're something with historical or cultural meaning that we might miss out on at first glance. The example for that which immediately comes to mind is "ryuuko", which usually means "two [opposing] rivals". The kanji making up the word, however, are the kanji for dragon and a less common word for tiger. So while the first draft translation for that line was "two legendary rivals", we ultimately ended up with "a dragon and a great tiger" or something like that.
The calligraphy part really was not something we could have gotten across in the way that the original text presented it. It involved Musashi musing about kaisho, gyousho and sousho; the three conventional forms of written Japanese. Kaisho is the one that we're all used to seeing. Gyousho is a faster, simpler form of kaisho used for calligraphy or for short-handing writing. Sousho is the fastest and loosest form of Japanese script, and it's almost purely focused on fast, fluid motion. Sousho is the form you will see most often used in Japanese poetry. Sousho is the origin of hiragana, actually. Take a look at this chart. The top line is the original Chinese character, the middle is the sousho equivalent, and the bottom is the present hiragana.
In the chapter, Musashi thinks about surpassing sousho, and how it could be accomplished. He envisions the idea that as you progressively make the character more simple, after an infinite reduction in character complexity, the brush is no longer needed to write characters. This reduction of complexity also ties in to speed, which is another aspect of Japanese calligraphy. His imagined brush form is impossibly fast. Applying that theory to the sword, he concludes that swordlessness can be achieved in the same way: absolutely no movement wasted (as you've seen in earlier chapters), and impossibly great speed. So yeah, no real way to have it make sense without a ton of footnotes.
