Talking completely out of my ass here, but in anime and most VNs you get accompanying speech, which probably helps fill in the gaps when you've watched enough to understand the flow of conversations a lot better and common phrases.
In LN's you only get the text.
Every now and then of course but there isn't much which I followed on a long term, at least I can't think of anything.

Even manga translations are often complete trash. Mangastream's Tokyo Ghoul translations are "they didn't even try"-tier. A lot of stuff is either lost or has the meaning completely changed from the original text and leads to confusion in later chapters.

I'm not talking about that though. I'm thinking more about losing meanings from the original text and well written english that flows naturally, two things that a lot of translations fail on.

I've done it with Clannad, Fate/stay night, the Suzmiya Haruhi LN series, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and plenty of more stuff. As a matter of fact, the only reason why I read manga and light novels now is because of anime.

Just to add, I've always thought it might be a good idea for when the translator is native Japanese, for there to be another person who doesn't know moon but is good at english and chooses how the english translation is phrased, after the Japanese speaker tells him the closest translation he knows.
So the Japanese speaker makes sure the meaning goes through correctly and the english speaker makes sure it sounds natural in english.
