This tends to happen in anime adaptations because they can't have him narrating so often. I've only seen the anime and Subaru is a pretty likeable protagonist so far. a) "The Universe" decides that a girl must die in more than one dimension (Mayuri/Haruka), so the protagonist travels through dimensions to protect her (Okabe/Yuu),
b) so in grief he tries to undo everything (Noein/Obake, although titular Noein wanted to merge all the dimensions, so that they'd all disappear, not go back to the original timeline),
c) so his other self from one of the possible futures tries to help him (older Okabe/Karasu).
d) Also, the world needs an observer. Haruka travels between many dimensions, but only her memory remains due to her "powers", what she sees becomes reality, which Steins;Gate later calls Reading Steiner.
d) There are also other people from the future, who want to kill the girl that caused everything that's wrong with the past, namely Suzuha Amane wants to kill Kurisu, Atori/Kuina etc. want to k̶i̶l̶l̶ utilize Haruka.
e) Haruka is just a merged version of Mayushii~ and Celeb-17. And while Kurisu and Mayuri both need saving by Okabe, in Noein Yuu/Noein creates Shangri-La because he saw his female childhood friend die in a car accident. (LOL)
f) And also, one failed experiment leads to terrible future:
