It was just different.Unpopular opinion coming through, but the highlight of DBZ for me was actually the Buu saga. Loved Buu as a villian, loved the fusions, loved the humor throughout. I liked the dub of frieza better, it had a better feel overall. The manga had him act more like a polite planet broker, which gave goku more reason to offer him help at the end.
However, Funi-Frieza acted like a apoiled brat all the time and taunted goku at every opportunity. It really gave it a feel of urgency to gokus plight, as he had trained all his life and still couldnt defeat a spoiled manchild born lucky. It really sold the anger aspect for me in the dub, the feeling of hopelessness where goku literally knows hes going to die and all he wants to do at that point is sacrifice himself to save gohan and krillin but hes tuckered and cant do anything. Then frieza has the fucking gall to taunt him with a childrens song, it really just makes the transformation work imo.
The manga also had it occur in just a few panels so its like he just ascended quickly, didnt pack a punch for me but its probly nostalgia goggles.

Both those are from the original Funi dub and sounded pretty good to me. There's others but those are the two that stuck out to me the most.
Funi dub had some good lines, some OK ones, some cringy ones. I've watched both the Kai and original Funi dubs at length and they both seem to succeed in some areas but not all. Like I said, the Kai dub is too chatty for me. I don't mind Frieza's actual voice but I just thought he (and other characters) talked too much. I'd rather have long drawn out scenes involving Ki blast charges and crumbling mountains than have to listen to more chatting, but that's obviously just my own opinion.

Add that there were some much needed recasts (like Freeza), the returning veteran cast is no longer comprised of rank amateurs doing imitations of the prior VAs, and they're not doing things like screwing with the music anymore... and after roughly 20 years we've finally got an English Dragon Ball "Z" dub that's actually GOOD.

The main reason Dragon Ball Z had that alternate Falconer soundtrack was because of money. Funimation didn't have the money to completely license everything from Toei when they first got the series. They actually had to partner up with Pioneer for their VHS and DVD releases because they just didn't have the money and manpower at the time and Pioneer was much more established in anime at the time.
Then there's the licensing costs. Haim Saban, and Suki Levy made their millions off of licensing foreign cartoons, slapping replacement soundtracks on them, and then charging others to air it with that music. Not so coincidently, Saban's company was the one who brought Dragon Ball Z to syndication with Funimation. Z's Japanese composer, Shunsuke Kikuchi is actually one of the highest paid in the industry, so that may have helped that decision.

If America wasn't so uptight about things and parents didn't allow the tv to babysit their children, perhaps more shows would come the U.S. and be uncut. At the end of the day, I am, and have always been a freelance actor, and just because I work for a company doesn't mean I support their decisions. This is the first time I have supported Funi's decisions publicly, and the staff at Funi is now amazing. It's a completely different company.
