I don't subscribe to the "Nasu is a hack" meme but I do think that Sakura's story was hamfistedly told. They seem aware of it too considering that CP episode about her life as a drama.
Had they made it clearer that she's a dear childhood friend I think it would have come off better. But there was a lot more telling than showing. Whereas Rin and Saber have a lot more showing than telling going on in their characterization.
