The MC is a dumb emo kid.
They hyped up the third episode like some stuff was going to be revealed, turned out to be a breather episode, also one that didn't have to be stand alone, and all it did was:

>Wild goose chase with slapstick
>Introduction of a gag masochist character
and the only thing that slightly advanced the plot
>Getting the cast together and announcing the next phase
I figured this wouldn't get as much exposure as Trigger's last IP, KLK and I felt this episode would be the trump card whether this makes waves. The anime however isn't over, but perhaps people are tired of being teased with weak payoffs.
I'm probably projecting, but that's the only reason why I think many aren't invested in this series as of episode 3.

Nothing is funny, the characters are annoying and the story isn't compelling.
I thought Macross Delta might end up being shit but I ended up having the main guy and girl grown on me and I find myself wanting to know what will happen next with each episode.
With this show I feel no desire to find out what happens next except to justify having already spent time watching previous episodes that feels wasted.
It's like the show isn't even trying to be interesting or entertaining. I guess I'm just expected to watch it because muh Trigger muh Gainax muh anime original.
