It's not amplified; the yield doesn't increase. It's just that water is in-compressible, so over short distances, the force imparted into the target (the hull) is greatly increased. But by this same effect, the damage "fall off" for lack of a better term is also greatly increased. Because of this, depth charges tend to do far more damage to the exterior parts of a submarine: Periscopes, Hydrophones, Diveplanes, etc. The people inside, and the hull itself is only damaged under direct hits (this wasn't) or under the stress of many near misses.

Depth charges were widely considered ineffective at sinking subs. A surfaced sub is a dead sub though, and the constant pounding from shock waves made operations difficult, even though the hull could easily withstand the pressure since the pressure of shallow water plus depth charges is not that much more than a deep dive.

Because sonar back then was shitty and so could only be used at low speeds, among other conditions. If an enemy is actively flinging torps at you, you are not going to be slowing down to 6 knots or whatever to get a ping off.
