I speculate that it's s monster or a ghost that gets in eye contact with someone, reads their mind/soul then transforms into whatever they fear or want the most. Either is fine for the thing, as lnog as it makes the people the most emotionally unstable.

I'm assuming that the village works like a gravitational pull. The map they have is useless navigating around the village and only serves to get the merry bus crew into the Mugen Loop Zone.
When inside the Mugen Loop Zone, you only need to navigate towards the general direction of the village and the village eventually pulls you in.
When trying to get out of the village, the Mugen Loop Zone again pulls you towards the village, making you unable to exit the gravitation of the village unless you have detailed instructions on how to get out. But again the map would be bullshit and not enough to get them out of Mugen Loop Zone.
That or everything was an illusion and Masaki passed out while warming out a hot pocket.
