One thing many of these "amateur" writers lack, and quite honestly professionals ones too, is keeping track of progression of story and where they want to land.
MT as a whole was a complete package narrative, where it never lost the sight of the story it was telling.
Somewhat the same reason why Twelve Kingdom was so good, although TK was a far better novel.
In my opinion narrative is more important than plot details or the actual story itself.

It's so funny watching people who have no ability to discern quality as they stumble about trying to pick a side regarding each polarising anime series. They watched SAO and initially loved it, but were caught off guard and embarrassed as they were informed of all of its flaws and made to realise the level of idiocy they were capable of putting up with.
Those same people then got ready to hate on and drop KonoSuba, only to discover after the fact that it had been a clever and self-aware light hearted comedy series.
Now we're watching those same people try to equip their prior knowledge and show opinions about Re:Zero, and all they've managed to do is form a pointless correlation of 'light/self-aware = good' 'dark/edgy = bad' for this particular genre/setting. That's why some idiots keep trying to compare this series with KonoSuba in the first place.
But the truth is that this series isn't trying to break 4th walls or lampshade itself or any of that nonsense. It's simply telling a story of how an endless nightmare steadily inflicts psychological trauma on the main character, as he's reduced to nothing more than a character stuck in a game.
It might still fall apart, but for now it's doing an excellent job and it's a strong contender for AOTS.

Re:Zero is a fresh combination of setpieces and tropes that has been directed and animated quite well. The only people hating it are either predisposed towards parroting critique normally aimed at SAO towards Re:Zero even though it doesn't apply, or complaining that it isn't another KonoSuba - even though there was no sensible reason to expect it to be.
