The further away from your target the easier it is to pull the trigger. There is less psychological pressure, and less visible trauma. Stabbing a person is the most traumatic way to kill someone, taking a shot from several hundred yards away is very easy to absolve mentally.

There's not much splashing around to be watched. At best you can see the spray on the wall, but then you're hundreds of meters away.

Because infantry units don't know every time they kill. They can spray an area where the enemy is, hide, and repeat. Snipers know exactly who they kill and when.
