What are some anime scenes that your were really impressed by on a technical level?

Must be 100% drawn, not cgi models.

>>

Those super speed fights in the Cell Games were fucking great. One of the few times where the viewer gets to see a DBZ fight from the perspective of a normalfag. Everyone seems to forget how fast DBZ fights really are. Freeza's 5 minute estimate wasn't wrong, the fight was just slowed down so the audience could follow. For example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQ2p5K9X304

>it is my personal headcanon that DBZ characters are capable of talking as fast as they fight
>>
>>140513677
>when it's done right.
But what counts as doing it right?
Most of the common tropes are complete nonsense.
>running around at high-speed and slowing down for the punches
Nobody needs to point out why this is retarded. Even if it weren't stupid to try and connect a low-speed attack with a high-speed opponent (it's possible), a fighter who can run at speeds where they become invisible to the eye, wouldn't even feel a punch at subsonic speed.

>getting low and delivering an attack to the opponents feet
Acceptable when the characters are actually capable of flight. Otherwise it's fucking dumb.

>2 dimensional movement
Possible when the characters are capable of flight. But stupid either way.

>barely any effect to their high speed movements
Where is the shock waves and the unavoidable heat development?

>"the fast guy" is not strong
E = ½ m * v²

So, what counts as doing it right?

>>140514423
>>it is my personal headcanon that DBZ characters are capable of talking as fast as they fight
That would make Goku a fast thinker. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
>>
Pretty much every time the backgrounds are animated, directors rarely bother with that shit unless they know they can do it well.

There are very few drawn anime that I know of where I was really impressed with the technical skills of the artists. Usually because if the skills of the artists are any good you completely forget about the technical level at all and you get completely immersed within the anime world.

From a illustrator point of view, I have to disagree when someone says; "Method x is better than method y" when it comes to art.
It shouldn't matter what tools or methods you use, what matters is the execution and the end result.
Yes a lot of cell shaded animation looks good, but that's because it's had 60+ years to develop.
CG and flash are still very new tools introduced to animation, give it some time to improve.
>>
>>140526249
There's an air of quality that comes from the sheer effort that goes into traditional animation. Quite literally, you value it higher because it took more to make.

For a show that might not even sell over 2k BDs this was really nice.
>>
>>140527073
This.
I rewatched Toy Story recently and that did some of that but it was because I was thinking "man they managed this over two decades ago".
Big CGI films, such as Pixar's, just don't have to me the same effect of a stylish traditional or stop-motion animation.
They may be good films otherwise but the animation doesn't evoke anything special.

When you look at traditional animation you know that someone actually drew those frames or someone took hours and hours of work to make that background.
Of course CGI requires artistry as well but to me it feels distant and sterile.
But I'm just a consumer that grew up without watching too much of CGI. Perhaps that influences my view of animation as a whole.

I think it all comes down to the process. It is hard to track down who are the individuals who make the scene of a CGI movie. In standard animation like Stopmotion and Drawn it is far easier to know who made each of the cuts. Where as CGI works in the Disney school of thought. In which a set amount of animators make a single scene. Which means unlike anime. They have 10 people touching up a scene instead of 1 single guy. Me and my brother did a marathon last year in which we watched all of disney's biggest films from the first (Snow White) to the end of the 90's (Tarzan). In which me and my brother understood why Disney changed dramatically compared to their earlier days. I mean a lot of the scenes in Snow White, Pinocchio, and Fantasia are far superior in animation quality compared to the 90's stuff that it was really odd that it went in a decline that way. Although the storytelling/acting in the 90's movies were much better and top notch comparatively to Walt's era.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uh1sCdcSDi0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iRlViQ7rAI

CGI has a sterile feel to it. Why do you wonder why Video Games are becoming less and less about high fidelity and more about artstyles? I mean the most impressive looking games are ones with vibrant and unique artstyles. Look at Deus Ex or Overwatch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvSs5b6y-YM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyBUMabtslI

Also impressive animation for CGI has an issue with it being compared to film. It just looks so natural nowadays. I mean if you knew that most of Mad Max: Fury Road was filmed in Cgi. It is impressive.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bL6hp8BKB24

I would say that the best CGI are the ones that are intentionally invisible to most people.
