I suspect it uses the string that runs inside of the limbs of the bow (not the one she's holding) to use the steam engine near the center of the bow to help apply extra tension to the bow-staves.
If I had to guess, it uses the steam to draw the assist strings in as the regular bowstring is being drawn back, then uses either a locking mechanism or more steam to hold them in place with the strings. When the bow is fired, it releases that tension at the same moment as the archer releases the string.
If you could actually make it work, it could actually be useful, in the sense that it would allow you to have what amounts to a compound bow (or one with all the benefits thereof) with an impressive draw weight, or at least allow a young woman to use a bow with a draw weight comparable to the longbow used by a yeoman archer raised from boyhood on the weapon.

Best idea I can come up with is this. Lets say the virus infects the host by emulating certain hormones or what have you, and slowly moving it's way through the central nervous system into various parts of the body. The usual response being pain, or horror. So the virus may be used to that kind of response. Now, cutting off the blood supply has a high chance of doing two things. One is, the virus is less likely to spread to the brain. Two, the nerves will probably fire off all sorts of reactions to all parts of the body in an attempt to keep itself alive. Flooding of other hormones, prioritizing the organs for blood flow instead of extremities, etc. Which if the virus needs to take over the host quickly, like if it needed an extreme amount of nutrients from the blood, it could effectively be choked out(kek) before it can fully spread, or thrive.
The nerves don't give a shit about whatever hormones they're mimicing or taking over. The blood supply isn't flowing to it like it should. Whatever body part is infected first could be necrotic and dying off already, or completely inhospitable, or the virus simply dies off quickly because it can't emulate a second set of hormones and has used up it's supply of tissue trying to infect the rest.
