This is more or less true, but there were still a couple of decent air-based fights in Code Geass too. In any case, I think the last battle in R2 was great precisely because they went back to the roots. And I suppose Akito deserves to be mentioned since all the fights in there are pretty good, as far as 3DCG combat goes.
