Now that the dust has settled was Naruto really that bad? I'm reading through it now and the story isn't anything special, but it's not horrible. I guess if you accept that Sasuke is going to be a secondary protagonist from the outset the fact he kind of takes over the manga after the timeskip isn't that annoying, and he's not really all that much more edgy than Vegeta or other 'rival' shonen characters.
The problem is that it could have been a lot better.

That war arc was just fucking repulsive though, kind of hard to forget about how much damage it did to the series
Compared to other Jump manga, it's not in the higher ranks. Probably somewhere in the middle or lower middle.

I guess so. The Chuunin Exam arc was really great. It introduces a number of interesting characters with unique abilities, a creepy villain and had some awesome battles that actually have some strategy involved rather than random powerups. If someone went back in time and told people reading that arc that in a few chapters all of those characters would be irrelevant for the rest of the story and the entire manga would hinge on getting Sasuke back even though he hates everyone, they wouldn't believe you.

Naruto had positive messages then took a Santorum on them in the timeskip over and over again. It's like the author was writing about himself trying to live up to his families name.
It might be the most hypocritical shonen manga out there.
The last half of it was awful and betrayed everything the series was initially about with a bunch of childish bullshit.
The first two arc were excellent though. Zabuza and Haku were legitimately great antagonists, and the Chuunin exam was lots of fun.

it got pretty boring after the chuunin exams, with a few exceptions (itachi's scenes, pain)
I enjoyed it. Both halves were really good, only thing that I have any complaints was how rushed the final chapters were. The last fight was no where close to good as any of the other important fights were across the whole series. I liked Naruto vs Neji and Rock Lee vs Gaara in the chuunin exams more than that last fight. Some flash back scenes i didn't give a fuck about.
People just hate it because it's really popular. Thats 4chan for you.
The change to " fite 1v1 me fagit" is shit while naruto returns to some team battle but after years, it is just different. As least for me.

Kishimoto has said that Sasuke is his favorite character so I think he just gave in to temptation and went full Gary Stu. The entire second half of the manga revolves around the Uchiha and how awesome they are, Naruto's own lineage is actually a footnote in the story because every single important character past chapter 400 is an Uchiha or wants to be an Uchiha.

It started out good and presented a canvas that had the potential for some great world building. All those eye hacks, furri power ups, chosen one, god tree, spirituality crap ruined it though.
I wish they never explained the origin of chakra. I liked how at the start it was presented as just a natural part world and human body just like the central nervous system.
I really wish they would of stayed focused on political conflicts between countries and villages. I also wish they would of gone into more detail on the relationship between a country and its shinobi village.
Such a shame the sound village didn't stay primary antagonists for longer. I loved the concept of how orochimaru convinced these kids with nowhere to go that he'd give there existence meaning when in reality they were nothing more than pawns and lab rats. I was pissed how team Dosu and the Sound 4 got killed off so early when they'd of made great recurring villains.
Even though it would of been kinda cliche is the akasuki's real goal was world domination like it was originally presented it probably would of made for a better story.
