I dunno, that was kind of an interesting aspect of it, actually. Yashiro kept failing because he couldn't even fathom that a kid was getting the best of him, so he was losing because her kept underestimating him. He ultimately wins the moment he puts the effort in, however. And at the end it was mostly for symbolic reasons than anything, I suppose.
Satoru takes a literal and huge fucking leap of faith, trusting his friends and family. It's how with everyone together he can actually outsmart Yashiro, which he needed Keya's help back then.

I think the premise was great but the MC's mentality didn't really gel with a murder mystery. He went back in time to stop his mother's killer and he seemed to forget about it completely. Didn't care who the killer was, his whole mentality was just "if I get Kayo past this date everything will be fine"
The show also kind of bombed on Blu-Ray in Japan for how hyped up it is in the West and how well the live action movie seemed to do. I love how Aniplex keeps trying to play kingmaker out of manga by doujin writers or even have them come in and write actual shows instead of just going out and hiring writers that actually kind of know what they're doing. If they'd even a fraction of the money they do on stealth marketing on getting a competent staff for their shows it'd improve their quality tremendously.

I think the problem is that we saw the whole thing from a different perspective than Satoru. We knew the killer must be an adult featured in the series. From Satoru's PoV though there wasn't such a rule. It could be anyone who lives near that city and most people would expect the killer to be someone they don't know. It only got really obvious since the point when Satoru was driving with Yashiro for the first time in the manga (when they're distributing those papers), or during the drive with Yashiro and his mother in the anime.
