This is when Anno showed promise. Then he went emo and created Evangelion.
>>
>>140359361
Here we have one of the shittiest opinions on /a/ - Gunbuster is better than Evangelion

To consider Gunbuster anything but trash with occasionally compelling moments is an absurd delusion
>>
I'm at episode 3 and considering to drop it.
I was looking forward to the ending that seems to be praised highly by /a/.

But Noriko's behaviour and the decision to select her as one of the representatives still bug me. Will her development later be a good payoff to finish the OVA?
>>
>>140359883
episodes 5 and 6 are some of the best anime episodes ever
>>
>>140359883
Episode 4,5 and 6 are the best. Once you get past Smith or whatever his name is, it's smooth sailing.
>>
>>140359883
It gets worse. The ending has no emotional impact whatsoever.
>>
>>140360103
Agreed. The fact that they used a montage for the final battle left me baffled, too.
>>
>>140359961
The series would be better without that Smith episode.
All the other ones are good.
>>
Smith was supposed to deepen Noriko's desire to be relevant and add bring her lack of capability into the forefront.

I'm starting to think only I know what this show was really about and it wasn't robots.
>>
>>140360540

obviously, it's aim for the ace! moved into space because Gainax somehow had too much money.
>>
>>140360540
>I'm starting to think only I know what this show was really about and it wasn't robots.

You're right, it was about mindlessly taking elements from a hit shoujo manga without thinking about it too much.

You're not alone, but sadly several people do go "wah, half the show isn't robot battles, so it's bad!" about this OVA
>>
>>140360645
I don't think I've ever seen anybody complain that Gunbuster didn't have enough robots, the complaints are always about the writing.

Gunbuster is my favorite anime production, ever. Space. Robots. Sexy girls. Leotards. Real suspense, emotional confrontations and consequences. All short enough to be easy to make people I know watch it. It's perfect.
>>
>>140360540
His purpose was obvious, but the execution was terrible. He was on screen for about five minutes, throughout which he showed no notable traits, and the main character not only fell madly in love with him, but also made his death the focal point of her entire existence.
>>
>>140357502
You're being fairly reasonable about your shit taste but I still want to yell at you
>>
>>140360540
There were better ways to handle that.

>>140360731
The main issue with Gunbuster is the characters. Noriko herself is likable enough and has a good arc but the rest are clones of Aim for the Ace characters without the context of that show.
Onee-san in particular is hard to give a single shit about and her relationship with Coach is completely left field.

Thankfully everyone except Noriko is background noise so the series is still good fun.

I can get that. It was a short one though and I'm sure they didn't want Smith to distract too much from Noriko and other girl. Two, from then on Noriko stays mostly to herself as a overreaction to Smith, i.e. she tried to partner with someone but they immediately died without her being able to do anything. Which is then brought full circle when she later on co-pilots.But smith was basically a reminder for her to not allow those things to happen, to stay trained and to not give in so easily to her doubts. (or someone else will die)

People think that way because, as you've said, it is not the part of a curriculum. They don't bother to teach a good skill to students. Instead, the anime clearly shows that Noriko, and only her, manage to pull it off.

There's nothing fun and exciting. It's trite and cliche, a creatively bankrupt chimera cooked up by some of the biggest hacks in the business.

Nah, the story was good even if it was edgy and aiming too much for the TTGL crowd.

Disagree, even then the visuals and "epic" moments are on par with Gunbuster.

Still better than Gunbuster

FLCL is the epitome of the Gainax ethos. It was made right in the transitional period between the old guard (Yamaga, Anno, Sadamoto, etc) and the young guns that took over the studio after that (Imaishi, Yoshinari, Sushio, etc) with Tsurumaki as the channeler of the best aspects of each who also compensated for the shortages of each approach. It's Gainax's peak point as a whole and one of the masterpieces of otaku anime.

Right, because we saw them doing algebra homework and cramming for tests instead of doing field training in the robots, right?

I don't need to prove anything, if you like 08th MS Team for anything but the animation, let alone call it one of the best mecha series, your taste is beyond shit. And to make things worse you also losted New Getter.

Of course that's assuming you aren't just shitposting in the first place. Which you are.

All we saw them doing is what high schoolers are shown as doing during PE in other anime, except that they were in robots.

I like the dire feeling a lot of media had back then. The same way that NES games are more difficult and it add to the tension. I wonder why people felt doomed back then as I'm a 90s baby.
>>
>>140364802

I was born in the (very) early 80s, so I really only caught the tail end of the era (late 80s early 90s,) but I think a great deal of the sort of feeling you are describing came from the fact that up through the fall of the Soviet Union, the threat of cataclysmic nuclear war was very real. While that may not have been as present a thing in Japan as it was in the West, it certainly had an effect on the atmosphere of the whole world, also for Japan specifically, there was the decadent, capitalist orgy of the bubble economy years, and then a mass feeling of fear, hopelessness, and collective disappointment when that bubble burst and they entered a huge recession.

>>140363095
Why'd they have to go and do that? Would it have gotten them censored or something? I think it's a shame that it's so hard to find now, every second of Gunbuster should be preserved.
>>
>>140357502
Nope, people on this website worship famous pre 90s shows to appear elitist and oldfag.
>>
>>140362545
I see this thread is still up, so I hope you don't mind me replying to you.

I think it's obvious to teach basic materials for those that are starting their study. As you proceed to a higher grade in schools, I'd imagine you will be taught even more complex stuff to complement the basic ones, like your example of tracheal intubation. In battlefield, you are expected to seek other procedures if CPR failed to ensure that soldiers won't drop like flies easily.

Same thing applies here. In case your robot's sensory function is broken, you can just ditch it and Thunder Kick your enemies as much as you want.

The fact that everyone, without exception, is struck with awe leads me to these points: (1) those poor girls are still stuck with the same learning material throughout their three years at school, (2) the school is a failed institution and should be abolished, and (3) the anime deliberately casts the spotlight on the crybaby but amazing rookie who can do one thing that third-year students can do too if given the chance to learn.

I can't help but to think that it is poor writing. I admit I'm being too critical towards this anime. But a flaw is a flaw and I don't see any point to defend it further.

I'll be sure to watch episode 4, seeing so many people love it here and I want to like it too as the animation and visuals are great. Thanks for the discussion.
