And you do need to check a few things, like making sure you're actually dealing with maxima / minima and not saddle points. And then at the end you need to understand how to find the 0's of the derivative of a complicated looking expression or you can just guess blindly on the original expression. If you don't guess blindly and try to do it by the book you need to have a relatively good understanding of how to find the roots of expressions.
I'd guess any first year Mathematics student should be able to solve it, but I can't really see an average high school student solving it.
