BGS doesn't seem like a Toonami show though, too many Japanese lit references that would go over the audiences heads. Bones has always had this unfortunate habit of having shows with near impenetrable convoluted storytelling and needlessly cryptic dialogue and character interactions that are just confusing as fuck such as to be rendered almost meaningless. It's probably what's hurting them so much in the long run and they've kind of been doing it again with Concrete Revolutio. It's not even a matter of shows being complex so much as I have nearly no fucking idea what is going on in them half the time. Kekkai Sensen started off quirky, fun and episodic but pretty much completely shit itself the moment it tried to have a story arc with White and her brother. I had virtually no idea what the fuck was going on after the boxing episode and never even bothered watching the finale

It's based on a manga, but as you said the Black/White stuff is anime original. The director recently said at a panel that she wanted to have something that would drive Leo's development towards a conclusion for the finale so that plot was included. The manga wound up bringing the conflict with his sister back into focus and wrapping it up nicely which would have made an excellent finale but I think they were too far into production to incorporate it properly beyond a few references, maybe an OVA or a movie will cover it someday.

Studio Bones is proud of making anime shows that are aired internationally, but just because they like doing that doesn't mean that they can only afford doing that. For every ConRevo and Space Dandy and Captain Earth original anime that they love doing despite selling horribly, they will have to make at least 3 or 5 adaptions for somebody else to finance stuff, and TV commercials, and video game and pachinko machine cut scenes.
