Agreed. Anime is a well-suited medium for sci-fi simply because you don't super ultra fancy CG and crazy budgets to get people to suspend disbelief. It gets that for free for being 2D animation.
There's a lot that a serious space anime can do that would be extremely expensive or otherwise prohibitive in live action.
