This is a bait and switch. She starts by indicating her answer to the question is that she's really only doing badly in one area, but it turns out she's doing badly in far more than one area.
The followup amounts to: "Wow, better than I thought!" This, contrasted with how the original joke was set up, is a double surprise. You'd expect the two characters to be shocked at how badly Tomo is doing, but instead they are surprised at how well she is doing. The fact that both characters have the same idea is also a surprise, because you'd think that was the odd idea to have instead of the regular one.

I mean, the series started with a confession. It's not even a pacing problem at this point either, it's a problem of content. The actual plot we were promised on the first page is sidelined and the reader feels aimless and agitated. Like if we were given some kind of indication of the finish line, it'd be fine, but we're left not knowing where we'll go or when we'll be close.
It's like how running on a treadmill feels like it takes a longer time than the same mileage on the street.
