Darkness kind of got screwed by the adaption since most of her stuff doesn't start until volume 3.
Her role in the first two volumes is pretty much to just be a complete weirdo so the reveal about her backstory is funnier.

Forget "secretly", Darkness consistently becomes the funniest character in the party every time she's stuck in situations where she has to be a mature adult.
She's probably the most interesting of the protagonists, actually, because she's pretty much two entirely different people stuck together.It's why she gets a little hung up on how Kazuma seemingly switches from being worthless to being supremely competent, and also why she's so happy with "that's just how people are" as a response.

The characters are surprisingly multifaceted in Konosuba. They have a lot of traits and aren't just one note characters. The character development is probably one of the strongest aspects of this series I think and all the characters are quite interesting.
