Cool. I might watch this. I never watched Sailor Moon in my childhood and I'm curious about it. Is this the best place to start? Since it's a gazillion episode franchise I think I'd prefer to just watch the most favored season if there's one.

Yes, you should definitely start with the original Sailor Moon instead of Crystal. It deviates from the manga more, but in this case, that's not necessarily a bad thing. It allows for more character development overall and is just considered more well written than the manga by many.
First season may be a little tedious for you because of the monster of the week format, but stick with it.

I'd definitely start with classic sailor moon. Lot's of amazing people worked on it. (Like the creator of Utena,Princess Tutu, etc)
Honestly it's hard to just jump into any season if (i'm assuming) you don't know anything since all the story arcs for each season kind of come together by the end of the series.
I'd suggest watching it in order Sailor Moon, Sailor Moon R, Sailor Moon S, Sailor Moon SS, and Sailor Stars.
It took me about 2 weeks to finish a season. All you really have to do is watch at least 3-4 episodes a day if you can. It'll start out a bit slow, and sometimes the filler is a bit tedious (though there are some excellent filler episodes, too) but it all pays off once you get to an episode where something big usually happens, and watching the characters develop.
Just, don't try to binge watch and you'll be fine! Have fun, anon.

If you like stuff likesteven universethen you'll most likely enjoy this show.
It has slice of life, monster of the week, and a surprisingly good plot to carry it through 5 seasons (sailor moon S happens to be a fan favorite, and mines too)
But you also can't just go in jumping into any random season and expect to know what's going on unless you already know who the characters are and their personalities.
I actually used to skip around watching the first season for years and watched all the other seasons until a few months ago. I was shocked at how much I enjoyed it.

All I remember was watching Sailor Moon on TV when I was a young child and adoring it. Even LARPed it with all the girls at recess (I was stuck with shitty Tuxedo Mask though, I wanted to be Serena). I want to relive those idyllic days, but updated animation, resolution, audio, etc. is too tempting.

crystal season 3 is great, but i'd suggest to reading up to chapter 27 of the manga or watching the first 2 seasons of the original anime to get a grasp of what's going on, and then starting this new season.

Personally I love the filler because let's face it. The plot in sailor moon isn't really anything to write home about. It's the characters and their interactions.
But it's hard to get new people into the show if they see it's 200 episodes.
That's why I put, don't skip the filler in my chart.none of those lists have episode 6 in them, and that's my favorite filler episode. super heated about that
