For all its visuals it lacked in visual storytelling.
How the fuck is it a blunder when the first episode was literally just exposition.
Okada angst show is full of angst, twenty minutes spent on exposition and character introduction with absolutely no indication of what the rest of the show is going to be. Especially by the stark, oppressive, apocalyptic dream world that the protagonist keeps dreaming about.
But it could be forgivable if the characters and their interactions are good, right? Pfft. Our protagonist is a sad sack who the world picks on because he's a sad sack. He's resigned to his fate of being bullied and beat up because he has the personality of a sack of dirt. He literally exists only to suffer because he supposedly can't feel pain. Dream Girl exists only to provide a nonstop exposition, mostly about how the world is full of strife, angst, and pain, and after that, to explain the nonsensical "now your angst and pain is split evenly between you, for… uh… we'll have to get to that next episode."
And that's it. Episode over. See how clever Okada is? See it!? This will surely make for some kind of compelling story and characters… someday. Not this week, but we wouldn't be having prophetic apocalyptic dreams if it wasn't, obviously. This episode was not about the characters. The protagonist has none. It was solely about explaining the setting and posturing over how 'deep' the writing is, and I know pretty much the same about both as I did a month ago from glancing at the premise blurb and staff list.
