Maybe I'm crazy, but I was very entertained by this show. I didn't go to it for like, laugh-out-loud funny stuff, but I always had this burning curiosity about what Hotaru was going to do next. I just found her particular brand of autism very charming.

I'd have to say the same. She's an odd duck, that girl, but not a bad one. It made me curious as to what her home life is like. Are Kokonotsu, Tou, and Saya the only friends she has? It would kind of make sense seeing how much she adores Saya and respects Kokonotsu's dagashi knowledge as a rival as well as his feelings on the matter of inheriting the shop. She was like a little kid who went to Disney Land for the first time; or Wonka's Factory in her case.

I would consider it highly likely that they were her only friends. How could she possibly relate to anyone except a group of people who were so intimately familiar with dagashi? For a moment, just set aside the obvious fact that the mango/show is built around the concept of dagashi and Hotaru was character was constructed accordingly. Think about her "in universe" rather than as a character who was created to serve a purpose; her entire life revolves around something that I can only imagine almost no adults give a shit about. Yeah, that's the feeling I had about her from reading the manga too ever since they showed that flashback of her in the Namaiki Beer chapter and noticed that she was literally the only child there. The anime adaption just kind of clinched it for me, especially when Hotaru mentioned that she'd never been to a festival before and then showed her skill with katanuki despite that.
She straight up said she bought a bunch of katanuki in bulk and never had an audience until today. This would probably mean at least dozens of hours by herself in her room practicing with a game usually meant for festivals she's never been to. Who does that? Kokonotsu asks that too.

Probably most kids too. Some of the reactions to her in the threads reminded me that there'd be people around her who'd probably find her insufferable to the point that no one would hang out with her, much less be friends. There's also the fact that she is an oujo-sama (albeit very atypical) so that could play a factor into her loneliness.
