i assumed that he wanter to erase his past and he sort of did when he killed everyone who trusted him (except guts) but caska was special. he saved her from rape so when he noticed the only 2 people alive are guts and caska griffith decided the best way to erase "griffith" and intrdouce "femto" was to rape caska instead of the man who was going to rape her when she was a child and griffith saved her. by having guts there to see it he also erased any positive feelings guts had towards griffith. only thing left was rage towards femto.

Honestly I think that Griffith loves (or at least loved) Guts. He was jealous of Caska. But in the end, to break his bonds he had to destroy everything of his old life, so he sacrificed the Hawks, raped the woman that stole his love (and who always was here for him, basically he felt betrayed when she went with Guts) and gave his best friend/love interest a reason to hate him. Just to break all the bonds with his old life.
