I mean, it does have some good trademark Takahashi humor. Parts of it feel nostalgic.
But on the whole it just feels like it's missing a lot of the innovation of previous Takahashi series.And there aren't any cute girls.

It's alright. Each character is basically defined by their quirks, which can be a good or bad thing. Ranma is definitely better, but if you like her other works too you might like Rinne.

Then why did she? She's not really acting at the behest of her publisher anymore. The days of "No, make Lum a main character and make this guy marry her" are far behind her. She can pretty much do whatever she wants at this point.
I don't think you're wrong; the series would've been better without the high school backdrop. I just think that a high school fantasy romance with a generic girl and lots of bishounen might actually be what she wants to write.

Well, honnestly, apst volume 25, she's just recylcing stuff without imagination or creativity. The characters don't show any sign of evolving/progression, the newly introduced character are plain boring and useless, the stories are just more of the same and rely on the same set-ups/tropes/scenes...
That's, like, my opinion, but 75% of the stories of the last third of the series are just uninteresting, if not bad.

I liked the more action focused stories in the 2nd half. But I guess that's why she went with something like Inuyasha afterwards.

Man, from around '98 to '03 I've been in hospital quite a lot, so I read a assload of Ranma fanfiction on a shitty laptop. Obviously, many (or most) were trash, especially in retrospect, but they still managed to distract me from some rather bad shit happening to me. And there was also some really good stuff I'd still recommend today.
On occasion I still browse fanfiction.net for new Ranma stuff, but my knowledge of modern fics is fairly thin overall.
First I'd recommend Learning Curve, it has some of the best fight scenes in fanfiction period and is a pretty interesting look into Ryoga's psyche.
Girl Days is another really good one. This one more or less reads like actual manga chapters typed out. Very funny, very weird.
Paradise Lost is a crossover with NGE, where Shinji is replaced by Ryoga. For the most part this is played straight by everyone but the people from Nerima, which makes the whole thing a riot.
And no recommendation list would be complete without The More Things Change. It's basically one of THE classic fanfics of the series and introduced many things that were later considered staples for fanfics of the series. It picks up where the series left off and just goes nuts. Very much recommended, but it's quite the doorstopper and the quality occasionally hiccups a little.
