Gally and Motoko are good choices, I mean I definitely don't agree they're on par with Kushana (I really don't think I can think of one who is) but they're not bad. Haruhi though is awful.

regardless she's the only female character I wouldn't object to if someone says she's more compelling and well written than Kushana.
Kushana is great not just cause she has great combat prowess but cause of how much she develops and really subverts that strong female warrior archetype. Though nausicaa does the same with being a pacifist and that motherly archetype as well.

Also, I do really like nausicaa too. Actually it's a tossup for me, who I like better. They are perfect foils to each other and are two sides of the same coin. While Nausicaa is a pacifist and motherly, she has a temper and well Doom's humanity to extinction in an ending that puts watchmen's to shame. Whereas Kushana has shown that she's not a generic female warrior and has also shown a motherly side as well.

You don't think watchmen is goat? I've read LW&C, The World is Mine, Berserk, all urasawa manga, a ton of Tezuka manga, all Inoue series, Devilman, Eden it's an endless world, BAA, 2001 Nights, Sanctuary, JJBA, Fist of the north star, Ravages of time, vinland saga, Akira and they all while great never managed to hit me like watchmen.
Namulith was just fun, I guess goat might be putting it over the top though.

Whatever the case this NEEDS to be adapted. The people need to be informed of Miyazaki's true opus. The nausicaa movie is a shriveled up watered down version of the manga. Kushana having some stupid ahab motive against bugs also pissed me off, they really fucked with one of the goat characters in all of manga.

Anno is a great director and his studio does good animation so there's no reason to be upset.
Whatever your feelings on Rebuild are a Nausicaa adaption would be taking directly from the source material, not writing its own story.
