Thoughts on Japan's love letter to Western cape comics?

1st episode was fun
Disappointed to hear he gains super strength(albeit with no durability)
>>
>>139640363
I'm glad it got an anime, it will increase its popularity.

>>139640365
It was either that or have the kid be a penniless Batman competing with super-powered monsters. It's for the best, plus the fact that the power is given to him and he has to work really hard makes him interesting and gives development.
>>
>>139640363
I want to fuck that frog.

>>139640365
Mangafag here, even right up until the current chapters he's still a more cerebral hero than your usual brawlers. The author gave him a super power, but he's still putting the work in and forcing him to think and put his non-quirk talents to good use.
>>
>>139640363

I haven't watched the anime but the manga is one of the first shounen I've genuinely enjoyed in ages I could almost pitch it as X-Men done right given how badly the X-books are treated these days.

The designs are great, the characters are great and while the plot beats can be a little hackneyed the dude has an amazing ability to make a fight or action scene MATTER. Usually any combat or action scene in these series will work as a major character-building moment at the same time, which is something missing from so much of both Western comics and manga in the cape/hero genre.

The endgame of his power would involve super-durability and super-speed as well, but at the moment exercising his power fully is something his body can't handle.

>>
>>139640378
If you ever give it another shot I would say the chapter Todoroki Shouto: the Origin (which I think is about chapter 40 or so) is the point at which you will know 100% whether the series will ever be for you or not.

That's a fairly big commitment to read if you're not into it though, I know.

I'm sure its great, but I just cannot do ANOTHER fucking high school centred manga/anime.

This coming from a comic fan, so I can see why it sounds hypocritical, but why the fuck do the japs have to follow the most formulaic, trope-character bland shit show crap for literally ever manga ever?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibPCLMH1NM4&feature=youtu.be
>>
>>139640382
If you removed every single manga with a high school setting, manga would still be about a thousand times more diverse than Western - at least American - publishing.

This manga is not really "the most formulaic, trope-character bland shit show crap" as you put it either.

It's because in Japan, high school is literally the last time most of them ever feel happiness. They have no reference point for having free time and friends who aren't coworkers, or getting to honestly express their feelings. And this is in a society where high school lasts 8 hours a day, 6 days a week. Work is worse.
>>
I like that the character even says that their powers are like out of a comic (as in he says komikusu and not manga, even though it can be used to describe non-japanese comics)
>>
>>139640385
actually it's set in high school because shounen comics are for kids
>>
>>139640383
no, but it is the type that gets rammed down everyone's throats, even if you dont watch the stuff. i.e. most popular, therefore representative of the media

>In Japan

>>
>>139640382
Japanese society tends to idealize high school even more than we do because the salaryman lifestyle is almost literally soul-sucking, so they see it as the perfect period where they're almost adults yet still free.
Also, teens are the target demographic.
>>
>>139640387
oh wow. I just realized why it's so popular in the west.

It's the exact same fucking thing with my little pony.

Meant for kids, religiously worshipped by overweight faggots in their mothers basement.
>>
>>139640385
When I think about it, the only shows I can think of that are set after highschool in the real world are either about people with cool jobs, and the entire show is about their job, or people who are failures at life.
>>
>>139640392
Wait, do you mean in Japan? Because the dull workplace comedy is practically a genre in the west.
>>
>>139640391
Your reasoning doesn't follow, or every kid's show ever would be worshipped by basement dwellers.
>>
>>139640393
I mean anime.

I can't think of a single workplace SOL that is actually about the job.
>>
>>139640366
The author was originally going to have Deku try and be a superhero with superpowers, but his editor convinced him not to. The lengths they would have to go to in order to make a muggle like Deku useful would have been absurd.

It's sad too because from what I've seen the japanese workplace is kinda hilarious if you forget that it's destroying their society.

The dirty secret of the japanese work ethic is that it isn't real. Japanese workers are less productive than american workers who put in fewer total hours; the bulk of that long workday is spent doing fuck all. It's overtime for it's own sake, meant more to demonstrate your dedication than to actually get anything done, and ambitious employees don't work harder to do their job better, they just jockey for position more in the hopes of getting to the top so they can do even less work.

Keep in mind that I don't have much experience with the japanese workforce myself, I've only been there once for a few weeks for my old job and things might have changed by now; but somehow I doubt it. This may be more true or less true for certain jobs or companies than others too.

I don't even mean to insult them; I can certainly understand why they behave this way, it's the only way to stay afloat in the workplace culture that they created. It would be funny as a show, but I don't mean to be mean spirited about it. The best comedy grows out of tragedy after all, and what Japan is doing to the Japanese is tragic.
>>

>>139640384

Give it a bit of set up and you've got shell smash cloysters wet dream
>>
>>139640408
Inspired by would be the better way to put it.

But it is a very honest take on capeshit, a lot like OPM, only as a shonen for kids rather than a comedic parody (what little difference there is there).

It's kinda like if the hero registration shit had went through, but instead of getting put under the military, they govern themselves mostly and train future heroes to follow suit and fight for justice and all that jazz.
But they're still spandex wearing, villain fighting, capeshit heroes when you get down to it.
>>
>>139640363
I've been reading it since the beginning, it's better than almost anything the west has shat out in the last 10+ years
>>
I'm not sure I understand the Villain Alliance's motivations. At first I thought they just wanted to get rid of All-Might and other heroes so they could have free reign to commit crimes. But now it seems they have some weird philosphical/moral reasons for wanting to get rid of the "Hero Society", like they actually think heroes are bad (and they're not the same motivations as Stain, whom I can at least understand).

Shigaraki has sort of evolved his thoughts on the matter a bit more. He still wants All Might dead, as he thinks he represents everything wrong with the entire hero system and society at large. He also dislikes that society puts restraints on powers held by just about everyone, and criminalizes their use except when acting as paid mercenaries of the state, to subdue said criminalized users.

Last but not least, he is an autistic manchild, and a sociopath.

While there are similarities, their culture is driven by different standards of human worth.

Doing something because it's the right thing to do, 100% selflessly will always be overshadowed by revenge and honour in jap books.

That's why they will never enjoy or even have 'The Superman' in the same way the west does.

Even this manga has a different sense of heroism.
In this series, the goal of the main character is to be the NUMBER ONE Hero.
Not to save lives, not to help people, his goal in life is to be the bestest hero ever.
In western comics, heroes rarely want to be the Number One Hero or the most popular hero, they just want to be heroes that help people even if they gett no respect or gratitude. Guys that do like Booter Gold are usually seen as jerks or disliked by their peers.

Heck the first chap is him running in to save somebody even if he was quirkless, the actual motivation to "be the best" is not seen in Dekus charcter at all. A normal person is definitely not so egocentric to think he can decide what is "right" and "wrong".
That's not a West/East difference. That's just Americans with their Wild West culture affecting their way of life for hundreds of years later.

Even for an European superhero being just a job - not unlike a policeman, makes much more sense.
Heck even capeshit realized superheroes being part of the military of police force is more believable about 10/15 years ago and most of the main Marvel plotlines were about that around the time I was still reading that dreg.
The "selfless" superheroes (aka the crazy "I got power so I decide who is a criminal" fucklords) were even being hunted by the legit superheroes were they not?

What was that arc ... Initiative or some such garbage.

Well serious response: you may or may not like BnHA.

It appears that Horikoshi intends for his series to be a continuous conversation regarding heroism. So far he has presented several different facets of heroism as well as their limitations.

Most of them are indeed very asians views of heroism, but Horikoshi's over-arching stance on heroism is rather clear at this point - that true heroes should be titles awarded to the extraordinary people among us who are altruistic in spirit, compassionate at heart, and courageous in their commitment to the former two.

sounds okay, but man, I just can't do the high school shit again. Every single fucking anime/manga that my weeb house mate recommends is set in or at least spends too much time in one.

I might give it a look if I get bored.

It's just crazy Americans being egotistical as fuck. Most humans operate for very selfish reasons. Also, it's a reflection of how Americans like to decide who is 'good' & who is 'bad.' Look at the way Americans report the news. It's 'Us' v. 'Them.' Look at how many Americans eat up Trump(Drumpf's) 'Us' v. 'Them' bs.

For all intents & purposes Batman is a horrible reflection of that ideal. Japanese heroes are much more realistic in their goals.

It's why japs take to marvels memeshit movies more.

>>

>judging something by its outlier

Man you are such a fucking shitcunt.

I could do the same in reverse. Marvel has spiderman, who does not even a little bit fit within his universe, outlook wise.

You could swap spiderman to DC, Batman to Marvel and they would fit twice as well as they did in their own universes.
>>
It's garbage.
>>
>>139643763
Lol what? Ok look at superman and tell me theres been no series at all which looks to deconstruct the man of steele?
Also I don't give a shit about Marvel as well. But tell me how spideys out look is an outlier out lookwise? Why wouldn't you pick somebody like moon knight? is it cos you don't read comics?
I'm saying if your industry is synomous with rape and getting refrigeratored is enough of a problem to become a meme then you can't say shit to japs.

The comic industry is filled with unnecessary depressing "realism" anon, fucking admit it.

You guys started with the missasumption that American comics are more idealistic than jap comics. Forgetting the fact that your most popular contributions (watchmen and every copycat imittartos it spwaned) are filled with depresing realism. Wolverine depresing realism. Deadpool at times. You have arcs filled with cancer induced heros, sucidal heros, sucidal villans. What the fuck is the preacher? There is way to many "mature" comics that make a laughable attempt at trying to be realitstic to account for. The worse thing is that these are the most highly rated shit that you guys have to offer.

Characters seem pretty neat, But I'm not very far into it.
also, there're a bunch of ethical and social problems that come with having so many people being empowered Like how Wars work in that world and the ramifications of being a non-quirk if you come from a family know for being heroes.
>>
>>139655722
>the ramifications of being a non-quirk if you come from a family know for being heroes.
I actually had an Idea like this, The character ends up becoming a Supervillain by building a device that lets him turn Data into Matter, he powers up a bunch of other people with SCIENCE to create a army to genocide all the quirks that won't bend the knee.
