No it's not. Most LNs just have like half a dozen monochrome illustrations per volume, and they're not necessarily anything impressive. And I can't think of a single case where the author did the illustration, in most cases they'd either ask a friend, commission it, or let the publisher find them an illustrator if they find the story worth publishing.

No, he started parallel to when a Japanese author wrote his story at the same time. They ended up picking similar concepts from the most recent things they've seen, i.e Stein's Gate with bad saves that can't be reversed.

No such thing. You'll be surprised how far Dengeki Bunko can stretch the boundaries of what an LN can contain. At least, it shouldn't be much heavier than, say, Tokage no Ou, if at all.

I don't know whether any publisher actually specialises in sci-fi, but you'll definitely find quite a few sci-fi LNs from Dengeki Bunko. I can't think of any titles at the moment that fit your description though.
