Am I the only one that felt the show suffered because of the ridiculous character designs? I was really into the world and story but the hair and eyebrows ruined the mood every time.

The pacing and the unbalanced screentime distribution between the characters were a worse issue though.
Some characters were completely useless andthe young male protag died for no reason at all.

It definitely did. Usually character designs wouldn't be that big an issue, but a horror series is hard to take seriously when the characters look ridiculous at worst and generic at best. It was creepiest when the colour palette was sepia.
I still really enjoyed it but it would be so much better and maybe even scary with toned down colours and designs. Imagine if ABe did it for example.

That was a huge part of the reason it suffered but not the entire one. The creators' intentions confused me cause part of it felt like they wanted us to take it seriously but then they went and did a bunch of over-the-top silly stuff like pic related. Even the serious parts had an element of sillyness to them.
Sometimes it felt like they were trying to parody the genre but there seemed to be too much "serious" existential shit for that.

I though the hair was funny. If anything ruined Shiki for me it was the inclusion of jinrou and howNatsunowas handled in the second half.
Did anyone watch the OVA's? The one where they are chasing down the dumpires in the sewers was fucking brutal. I cried anons. When the dude put all of them out of their misery. He walked around as the people he knew burned to death and screamed. He stabbed a stake through the screaming ash filled lungs of his neighbor....
