Danbo is the reason why the series still has its integrity. Azuma said in an interview that his publishers wanted to use yotsuba and other characters for all kinds of marketing stuff to boost sales because of how big a hit it was. He refused and instead let them have danbo to go wild with so he could keep his characters in the manga and not plastered all over every product (like evangelion has done).
