Most time travel stories give you a broken character, tell you they've looped 6 gorillion times, and expect you to relate or empathize with them. But you can't, because they're so far gone they barely act like humans anymore.
Okabe on the other hand, is a believably written character you stick with the entire adventure, seeing him slowly get worn down to a miserable husk of his former self, fully absorbing every tragedy along the way.
