This show was so fucking depressing.
>The entire build up to the tragedy we knew was gonna happen
>The tragedy happening
>Everyone is miserable
>Flash forward on the last episode
>Everyone is still miserable
>Now the woman is pregnant on top of it
>As if that wasn't enough, Rakugo is destined to fail

I hope we get a second season. This is a really sour note to end on.

If you couldn't tell that this would be a downer anime from the first episode, then there's something wrong with you.
>>
How popular is Rakugo in real Japan? Do they televise it there? Are there celebrities based on their Rakugo? I never heard of it before this show, the show did give it the feeling that it was an art that was gonna be washed out by the other forms of entertainment.

I got it from the second episode on, but I still wasn't ready for it to end on such a sour note. Perhaps Season 2 will have a bittersweet ending at the very least.

>>

>This show was so fucking depressing.
>I hope we get a second season.

Yes OP, this show was AOTS and it'll be AOTS again when the second season hits.
>>
>>139553380
That sounds like an hopeful story to me. It only got depressing with the implications of real life Rakugo popularity plus the woman talking about how he killed the other famous dude. That's when stuff started being depressing.
>>
>>139553471
There's nothing hopeful about it. When you go to prison, your life is destroyed. Anyone coming out of prison is depressed by default. The job prospects for people coming out of prison are extremely bleak. Many ex-cons commit suicide. As for this guy's dreams hinging on a decrepit old men, old people are known for one thing: dying. They can also be senile and notoriously moody. Add together someone being an ex-con with very few options in life, and link his destiny to someone who is moody and possibly close to dying, and you have a recipe for a very sad story. There's something wrong with you if you can't see this. Are you autistic?
>>
>>139553117
Yotaro, Konatsu and Sukeroku's VAs have done rakugo. Sukeroku's VA was a member of the rakugo club in college.

The mangaka and the anime have been collaborating in events with rakugo performers.
>>
Yeah I didn't expect the last episode to be that down.
Bon looks depressed as fuck because he is old and lonely.
It started to make me scared to grow old.

The whole rakugo thing dying out is also incredibly depressing. God damn.
>>
>>139553702
Picturing Kobayashi doing rakugo both scares and excites me.
>>
>>139553668
I mean, I knew there was room for misery, but at the same time it started as a show about a man coming out of prison to try to become a master of Rakugo (bear in mind this still back when Rakugo was more popular in the 70s) by becoming an apprentice to an old master that had never taken an apprentice before.

The end of the first episode even has the old man going "Let's rejuvenate Rakugo together, promise me that".

I'm not attacking the show, so I don't see why you're being so defensive.
>>
>>139553735
The theme of passing on to the new generation is there throughout the show.
Even if Rakugo gets less popular there's still hope.
>>
I knew it would be dark but that closing scene on the flashback really got me.
>>
>>139553702
That's some pretty cool facts I didn't know. Do you know if Rakugo is still fairly popular in Japan? Or is it more of an old art that is mostly ignored? Do shows sell out? I tried googling but haven't found any success looking for the answers. Perhaps if I knew moonrune...
>>
>>139553874
You are lacking some serious life experience and wisdom if you think that means that it was ever going to be a story of hope.
>>
>>139553668
Anon, I'm getting depressed reading what you're writing to that other anon. Please no bullying.
>>
I've tried looking for subtitled videos of rakugo performances, and mostly I just turn up people doing rakugo in English, which really isn't what I'm looking for. This is the only one I've managed to find.
https://dotsub.com/view/1f837443-69df-45d8-a786-d78bf7397951

Does anyone know where I can find more subtitled performances?
>>
>>139553380
You know, I was confused about this from the outset. Why would one of the most famed rakugo performers of the era be putting on shows in a prison?
>>
>>139553938
Me too. ALMOST as chilling as his Shinigami, but let's be real there's no topping that.
>>
>>139553117
It ranks pretty high among the numerous classical arts of Japan. Its golden age is over so it's not as popular as it once was, but it's definitely still not close to being forgotten or washed up. Specials are televised here and there, there are still theaters dedicated to hosting rakugo performances every day, and DVDs and CDs of performances are still produced. With that said, it's true that people have long preferred other forms of entertainment, especially TV shows and movies.

Regarding celebrities, aside from the really famous ones, most rakugo performers can probably walk on the streets without being recognized by common folk. Much like VAs, I guess.
>>
>>139554080
It's fiction, you bully.
>>
>>139553961
Not very popular compared to manzai and other forms of entertainment but it manages to survive. There was a boom years ago when the dorama Tiger and Dragon aired. The MC of that show was a yakuza too.

Man I'm hoping we get to see Konatsu do a performance at some point but it feels like they're setting up for her son to be the next generation instead. In reality the first woman shinuchi promotion apparently happened in 1987 so I guess the timeline would kinda match but it seems unlikely.

>>
>>139556334
>what are dna tests
Maybe Bon will tell her the truth on his deathbed, like his master did to him.
>>
If I get the director's cut right, the "shinjuu" is Kiku dying along with Sukeroku's rakugo that he kept alive inside himself all these years. That's what he said after doing Suke-style rakugo for Konatsu. Also, when he talked about their promise at the very end, he says that if Yotaro fails to fulfill the promise, it'd be "shinjuu". Am I right?
I tought that the double suicide thing would be related to Miyokichi at first but after rewatching, I've changed my mind.
>>
>>139556561
Yes, but the story and how its events played out is told by Kiku. Later on in the manga, it turns out he deliberately lied about the events surrounding their death. So it's a possibility this is also a lie, and that his indifference towards Konatsu is in fact varying levels of guilt, shame, and sorrow surrounding the circumstances, rather than him simply not caring about her in his perpetual withdrawal.
I haven't actually read the mange.
>>
So what is this "lie" everyone has been talking about? I guess i have not been paying attention enough.
>>
>>139556665
I need to rewatch the first episode, I feel like there's so much more I'd get out of it now. Hoping the director's cut gets subbed soon.

>>139557125

>>
>>139557096
Instead of falling from a balcony like Kiku's lie, Miyo verbally abused Sukeroku for doing rakugo, then stabbed him in the gut. He didn't defend himself like the useless drunk he is, and died. Kiku is heartbroken at the scene of the crime, and, just as he's about to be gutted voilently by a wide-eyed, foaming-at-the-month Miyokichi (who blames Kiku for her whorish behaviour and poor life choices), Konatso comes and stabs Miyo in the back. Miyo collapses onto Kiku, clutching his manhood in desperation, dying grasping the only source of livelihood and comfort she has ever known in her entire miserable existence.
>>
>>139557088
>So it's a possibility this is also a lie
Oh, right. I highly doubt it though. It's been emphasized in the show how Kiku thinks that Sukeroku resembles Konatsu, both inside and out.

>his indifference towards Konatsu is in fact varying levels of guilt, shame, and sorrow surrounding the circumstances
It really is that. He's that way towards Konatsu because of the guilt, shame, and sorrow he feels about ruining the lives of everyone around him, even the poor kid who became collateral damage.
He does care about her but I think he holds himself back from connecting with her to keep pain away. Maybe he believes deep down that anyone he gets close to is taken away from him, and so he treats Konatsu antagonistically on purpose so she stays away. Maybe it just hurts for him to look at Konatsu and be reminded of Sukeroku and Miyokichi. Either way, I don't think it's a plot twist and that he's actually the real father.
>>
>>139558150
>clutching his manhood in desperation

She doesn't remember anything. In the first episode, she even asks Miyo's friend to reveal to her exactly what happened on the day of the "accident".
>>
>>139559287
It's criminal that this is considered hidden. I remember looking over what would air in the season and by far Rakugo had the most going for it. I dunno what made people glance over it a first, it had been in production forever and the director has already established himself as great.
>>
>>139560604

>>
>>139560604
Same. Just a first look at the synopsis and the staff and cast and this was already at the top of my to watch list for winter. I think most anons just dismissed it because
>DEEN
>three male main characters which means "hurr fujoshit"
>the unfamiliarity of rakugo probably made them think that you had to be Japanese or a weeaboo to understand and enjoy the show
>>
>>139560604
I think it's been very visible in AOTS threads, there's always a lot of people mentioning it. But I think there are lots of people who will just refuse to watch it out of principle (because it's apparently 'fujoshit).

I loved every episode until the last one. Holy fuck that was a terrible ending

You mean the bit in the middle of the story?
>>
Is it me or Matsuda-san (who was already old) didn't age that much, while Kiku (who was't that old) aged a lot
>>
>>139579882
Matsuda is old so he went bald, Kiku had a stressful life so his hair lost colour.

That's what I meant about Konatsu assuming Kiku as the killer at first, but the next page shows Miyokichi talking to Konatsu before she gets pushed off the balcony. I don't have it saved but some anon posted the untranslated page previously

I don't get it

It's just in her genes to cuck men

Her mom was a double and triple cuck error after all
>>

Remind me who Konatsu cucked again?
>>
>>139580879
She turns men into cucks. It's in her blood.
>>
>>139558150
I as wondering because konatsu memory of it was very different from the story that Kiku told

Sluts ruin everything.

If he didn't crush her so ruthlessly. None of this would have happened. Likely that they would have saved rakugo instead of destroying everything

No reasonable person would think
>well I'm not dating this woman and physically reject her on a regular basis, time to be cruel and harsh about rejecting her in case she tries to murder me and my friend out of spite in the future, even though I don't hate her or particularly want to hurt her
