This show is what happens when you have an interesting idea for a story, but don't have an idea for the ending, and then you just kind of hope you'll come up with something at some point while writing. It's full of disingenuous foreshadowing and dead ends and story elements that were never reincorporated and so became irrelevant.
I like this kind of anime though. I think the reason they don't happen more often is precisely the same reason this one fell flat. Namely, that a story with this much complexity requires more thought and effort than most writers are willing to invest.

Everything after the reveal felt like an "Oh shit, I need to give this a happy ending" by the creator (even though it was still a bad end for Satoru)
It was pretty clear Yashiro was the killer about 3-4 episodes in, him losing that race to the kid who is in all of 3 minutes of the show being played up as a big moment and going nowhere, Yuuki is in maybe 15 minutes of the series (counting all the openings) despite being the main suspect in the future (did they even mentioned he hung out with that other girl before showing them at the park?).

And furthermore you have to consider the OST (Yuki Kaijura is generally good tier even if the soundtracks are all a one trick pony), the animation (stellar in this case), plot compression and pacing (conveyed most of the important threads even if it was short which is important if it's not a book where the author can afford to spend more time characterisation). And Yashiro doesn't have the 'coma' scene which means the instant Satoru wakes up he'd want to get his hands on Satoru again and try and provoke another confrontation.
This is assuming that Satoru gets into hospital in the first place. If all he gets is amnesia from drowning, well presumably Sensei knows CPR and why would he bother letting his prey get away from him if Satoru doesn't even need any treatment? It would be illogical for him to reveal himself by letting someone who is in the right mind but without a memory into a situation where he can blurt everything out. He also can't verify whether or not Satoru is really faking the memory loss.

Yashiro wants to see himself as Buddha because he wants to be the arbiter of fates. He kills people without consequence and is the fact that Spice survives feeds his complex.
But on the other hand Yashiro is Kandata because he is sinful and has only committed one good act (the saving of Kayo) and for that Satoru sees him as his father. On the rooftops, Satoru offers Yashiro the chance for redemption and Yashiro is moved because Satoru/Buddha/Jesus says that he 'bears him no hate'. (Whereas he would have expected Buddha to turn his back on him if it went according tot he story).
You can interpret the allergory in two ways - the string snapped because Yashiro is saved and redeemed (red → brown eyes) or the string snapped because he let Satoru die (he 'let go' of the wheelchair) but personally I think it's the first situation.

There were a couple of QUALITY moments, but the animation is pretty damn good considering the amount of really high energy fights in that show.
