I have nothing to go on except an incredibly vague story outline and the fact that Gainax is dead.
Expectations are reasonably low. In any case, my opinion of the first series won't be lowered by this new one, whatever the outcome.

Anybody else find it interesting that one of the most successful anime to be brought over to the west didn't change character names to some silly westernized version and even used terms like senpai in english?

Seems quite unnecessary, the first one was a coming of age story that ended with Naota finally maturing, there is nothing really left to tell.
I think the majority of neo-/a/ didn't even bother to watch anime but it's of the rare real cuckold anime.
