He's a huge douchewad, but he keeps pulling the most selfless shit and all he catches is flak from the party because they can't stand his personality.In volume 8, the party gets split up and Ranta and Mary get captured by a warband of mixed species. They basically say they're going to run a rape train on Mary and Ranta steps up and says she's his woman and that he'll fight for their party if they keep their hands off her. Their boss is an Orc that was raised in a human family and is pretty based, and he takes a liking to Ranta and agrees. Kuzaku shows up later and tries a rescue and fucks up, so Ranta offers to fight him 1v1 rather than see him get torn apart by the gang, he beats Kuzaku and enables his escape. Kuzaku tells Haru what happened and Haru goes to rescue them. Same deal, Ranta asks for the 1v1 or they'll butcher Haru. Ranta telegraphs his attacks so Haru can counter them all, and Haru ends up whipping his ass badly and wounding him in the process. Haru and Mary make their getaway and leave Ranta behind because Mary never opens her stupid mouth to tell him it was all a ruse to save her and Haru convinces himself that Ranta's turned traitor.

The LN makes it pretty clear that Ranta likes Haru a lot more than Haru likes Ranta. The anime tones down Haru's antagonistic jealousy significantly. Funnily, prior to volume 8 it was looking like Haru was finally getting to the point where he could appreciate having Ranta around without being nauseated by the idea, but that seems to have gone out the window.
