The problem is that NTR used to mean the same thing/ something very similar to cuck. Cuck means having their spouse taken away/ cheat on them and NTR used to mean having someone that the character was in a relationship with taken away/ cheat on them.
But /a/ and 2chan have twisted the term "NTR" to mean "one character likes another but that character doesn't like them back and goes out with someone else." This comes from the creepy notion that just because you like someone, they're supposed to be obligated to like you back.
This is also probably because the "liking someone who doesn't like you back" scenario probably hits a little too close to home for most otaku (it happens to most normal people too but not quite as often), and they are escapists who don't want to be reminded that this is a thing that can, and often does, happen.
