Even the VN walked the razor's edge with text vs. imagery
Lovecraftian horror falls apart really badly when you visualize it. The unknowable, the unfathomable, and the obscene is best described (and circuitously instead of directly at that) in words rather than shown in images. Being able to see it constrains it, and renders a large part of the horror impotent.
