Stuff like Sakura's adoption and Caster's hobbies were without a doubt dark, and especially the Caster duo was most certainly thrown in for that Urobuchi edge. Anyway, I never said it was, I was just talking about the portion of Zero's fanbase who enjoys it just because they like "edgy anime". Those tend to exhibit the exact same kind of behaviour you had when faced with F/SN: take everything at face value, because surely there's nothing interesting to think about this "generic tsundere" and "generic shounen protagonist", am I right? Anyway, it's pretty worthless to discuss the writing of F/SN if you haven't read the VN, or at the very least finished the damn anime.

I wouldn't really say "shit" but yeah she is indeed plain and generic, I mean her own route doesn't even focus on her or any struggle she has, nothing. It's like she doesn't have a story to tell or that she just can't carry the story. I genuinely thought she was just waifubait until Heaven's Feel where she becomes an actual character instead of Nasu self inserting himself into the story as an exposition character.
Rin vs Sakura was great and that scene in the epilogue where Rin asks her if she's happy makes you actually feel like they're sisters. It's such a shame that Nasu never showed us more of them being actual sisters, I'd like that.

No shit, I actually entirely forgot about that Caster crap in Zero. That was the worst part about it, and the most nothing part of the series.
The reason I brought Zero up as a comparison is because I felt that the primary characters in the show were more compelling. Period. Usually people use a three or four "episode rule", right? When watching something new? I got seven into UBW and I saw literally nothing that indicated there was anything more to Shirou or Rin. Or anyone. And I even know who Archer is, just by lurking too many threads. I'm still not finding it interesting. Wouldn't you drop content if you felt the same that far in?

Because I enjoyed the setting and the events that happened. It's one of those types of works where you start to appreciate it as a whole once you are done with it. You simply can't see the whole picture when you start it, that should be obvious.

"Introduction to the setting and Shirou" is just its role in the grand scheme of things. By itself it's a pretty simple shounen-like story, and it completely wraps up Saber's story from beggining to end (unlike Shirou and Rin, who get development throughout the 3 routes). It's generally considered far weaker than UBW and HF, and days 2-8 are especially hard to get through with no real action happening, but it has its good moments and is still essential for setting up the rest of the VN. Definitely a big barrier for newcomers though.

The main character definitely was dumb considering how stubborn he was, and the show ended with that as part of it's point. But the fact that he wasn't a generic school kid with the typical idiocy that's rampant in your usual anime romcoms (Shirou) was enough to make Kiritsugu more interesting to me. The fact that Kiritsugu was a super under-handed piece of shit (which clashed directly with Saber's ideology), no matter how dumb or stubborn he was, gave me a much fresher dynamic than the tired trope Shriou felt like as far as I went in that show. That's about it. I'm in no way saying Zero has great characters. They were just comparatively better to me.

He wasn't "stubborn" he was an edgelord that threw away everything he had for some dream, he even made himself unhappy on purpose because being too happy was weak. He tried to stop having feelings or loving things but he never could, so he just punished himself.
The whole reason Kirei despises him is because he can have everything but throws it away like a retard when someone like Kirei simply can't because he's genuinely empty just like Shirou is(something that gets adressed in the final fight of HF).

Saber was just the same as he was during life. Urobuchi himself said he didn't really understood Saber's character so he just made her a massive moralfag to be there and get punched by his "cool" and "realistic" guys liek the delusional fuck Iskandar and the edgy manlet Kerrytugu, he always has a character like that in his stories, the guy has the range of an amoeba when it comes to writing.

Shirou is only like that because he's genuinely crazy, he saw Kiritsugu saving him and now he tries to emulate the same because Kiritsugu was happy back then.
Shirou is never against using underhanded methods either by the way. It's just that he was never prepared for the war and he's fighting servants instead of masters like Kiritsugu was. Even then Shirou makes a lot of strategies and lots of plans in order to not get killed(he still gets killed a lot). There's a bad end where he kills everyone and wins the war.

He was literally "no compromises"- the character. Saying he was just an edgelord is nothing but short sighted. No, he wasn't a very complex character, but the show clearly paints the picture as to why he is the way he is. He couldn't make himself kill his childhood friend, which caused an entire small town to die. The lesson he took from that far too black-and-white, which is why I say he's stubborn. He went and made sure he became the guy that could make the "hard decisions" and save more people than what would die. It was dumb, in retrospect, but saying he's just an edgelord is stupid.

He had a chance to start over with Natalia, instead of thinking of a plan he just killed her. He had a chance of living with Maiya,a broken kid he rescued, instead he just used her as a tool. She reach the same conclusion in HF and UBW you seem to forgot that (inspired by Shirou she drop the pragmatic magus path, and by herself she decide to save Shinji and Sakura.) but this is totally in tone with her character since her 'burden' is the dual life magus/normalgirl she lives since she is young .Her choice will be impacted by Shirou/Sakura and Archer dreams. During the story you can see different facets of her personality and shirou made some comments about how chocked he is after seeing her 'true' side,this is why Shirou and Rin made a great duo because Shirou with his 'seigi no mikata bullshit' is tilting Rin. So yeah by herself we can say she's not that interesting but that's totally understandable because her conflict is to reveal the mask she put on.
This is also why if Rin was the MC the story would be shit.
