I watched the second last episode and it was so melodramatic I couldn't take it anything that was happening seriously.

The situation is dire. Absolutely everyone is bleeding heavily and being diced up like salad, but they all so courageously soldier on again and again, scene after scene (except irrelevant unnamed fodder dropping like flies naturally to make things seem more tense). Then Tetsunosuke and his subordinate have constant flashbacks while Tetsunosuke is being ripped apart like no other and is frequently alone like a giant death flag is sticking out of his chest. Gorilla and Tetsunosuke look hopeless and appear dead in a dramatic scene, while teary eyed friends rally with Gintoki in an intensely emotional moment. Of course, Gorilla had no flashbacks and miraculously survived thanks to an also living but steadily worsening Tetsunosuke.

Then absolutely everyone makes it to the ship that lands and as they are about to escape, more flashbacks and Tetsunosuke sacrifices himself to save the others and falls.

The fact that he didn't even succumb to his injuries and instead had to have yet another melodramatic moment which only then killed him was awful to watch.

I don't know. If this was Monster or something related, I would consider what are you saying as valid. But this is Gintama, and Sorachi never tried to change the tropes, he just uses them in a more twisted way. I have never expected someone relevant to die in the manga, and when Shogun did it, I was really surprised, but then I knew nobody else was going to die, because this a Shonen, and Sorachi actually managed to make the readers really fond of a secondary character, to the point his death was sad. So, instead of killing a main character for the sake of some reactions, he turned a secondary into an important one.
About blood and wounds, if a shonen, those are a fashion, I don't know why you were expecting a realistic depiction of a fight in Gintama.

Dunno, I honestly had the impression they were forced to rush through to the drama arcs, in order to end the show in March. Like they had thought "hey, let's just animate what we can" and then when they were making the storyboards for the drama arcs, they realized at some point they'd need more episodes than they had planned and had to start on December instead of the last cour. It would explain why they had Beautiful Days for the first four episodes of the Shogun arc, to me it never seemed like something they intended to do.

This. I just think the plotting is a bit haphazard.

I understand that there's been tidbits of the politics over the years. But I don't feel the requisite emotional connection or have the understanding to really care about the whole issue.

The last few arcs have been a long string of power plays for shogun by internal and external (aliens/foreigners) forces. But for me none of it matters or feels right. Shogun merely said 'fuck being your puppet', there wasn't enough about teh day to day shit, politics etc around the shogun for me to care. It all had to happen because the tenuous link with history the series has.

Then comes the action, it's not a realistic Chanbara or anything so character tank unreasonable levels of injury, almost comedy arc levels.

It's just sort of lost me because of a massive disconnect between comedy and plot, where the plot isn't as developed as I'd like. Most of it is there.

Why can't this shit be funny again? There are actual people right now who think this is the funniest season. Such shit taste. That was the only thing GIntama had that made it unique. Then it got all fucking melodramatic and serious. Gintama's seriousness in contrast to its comedy is worse than FMPs seriousness to comedy and when FMP was serious it was pretty bad.

HOLY SHIT, why is Gintama so fucking good!? How they do it!? Just finished the last episode, when the ending(DOES) start playing I almost start crying, with all the recompilation of the shinsengumi, I almost feel like I should rewatch the whole series.
I really hope the funny Gintama come back though, but I think that's impossible now, so I think it's fine that Sorachi is ending the series this year, I already miss it.

I think the reason people diss the last two arcs is because there was a severe lack in gags, which the series is most known fore.

Also, the heavy Japanese politics fly over everybody's heads because there were so few episodes that mentioned them.

I for one enjoyed the character development we got out of Kondo, Isaburo, Zenzou, Gintoki and even Takasugi.

Without Shogun Assassination, Takasugi's plight would've just been seen as meager revenge, but the twist definitely made his argument stronger.

Without Farewell Shinsengumi, we wouldn't have learned about Isaburo's motivations as well as Gintoki's motivations by Kondo to keep fighting the good fight as their own brand of samurai.

It would keep with the trend of 1 side character dying per arc, but since Umibozu's motivations are only really tied to 2 characters, I doubt he'll die.

The only reason I could see it happening is for Kamui to move on from his mommy issues.

I'm rather glad it's over.
I hated this adaptation, and didn't care for either of the last two arcs.
every aspect was awful compared the previous seasons: animation, art, music, direction, story, whatever you name it. from the second episode onward, it didn't feel like "Gintama" to me at all.
the first episode was great, and I watched it many times during the week that it aired, and wouldn't mind watching it again and again. but the rest? definitely not.

I guess I'll go read the manga instead. hopefully that'll make me laugh, or at least not be bored out of my mind.
