It varies from house to house honestly. Shoes are fine in my house (though I hate wearing them, prefer to be barefoot in the spring/summer and wear socks fall/winter) but I've gone to houses where they prefer you take them off and leave them in the doorway. If you're going somewhere for just a quick in and out visit, most people don't mind if you keep your shoes on as long as you wipe them at the door. Some people even dislike it if you take your shoes off in their house because you come off as too comfortable (like a 'you own the place' kinda thing, I guess). There's just not a universal mindset for the issue like there is in Japan.
