Once it's settled that he has to save her the plot really becomes more silly, he stops acting mature and blows his cover without thinking the results in the long term. It's just a personal opinion that maybe it could had worked better if there had been more focus on building up a relationship between them, in theory she liked him even in the main time line and it's never developed how that could happen. If there had been an epilogue maybe I'd feel different. I wanted either more romance during the past or the future, just to make it seem worth it.
