I think it will work quite well as long as they put proper effort into the background scenery and don't try and alter the story or commit the heinous crime of having the characters engage in long and/or frequent conversations.

That would be problematic because of the emphasis on time in the manga. They would have to choose between an emphasis on combat and story or an emphasis on The City. Unfortunately, this is a film adaptation, which likely means the former is inevitable.

If the film sells really well, maybe we'll get a true anime adaptation that can handle both.

Blame is about a man who walks across the solar system, and not exactly in a straight line. His trip would be literally billions of kilometres in distance and tens of thousands of years long. I don't see how you could capture that kind of scale and loneliness in an anime.
>>
>>139271442
But even in the manga some of that was just "Killy and Cibo rode the elevator for 100 years". I agree the pacing of an anime would be problematic, but scale and loneliness I think is doable.

If you go back and flick through some of the later volumes, there's lots of pages of Killy traveling for an unbelievably long period of time. Several pages in a row will just show him walking across landscapes that would take weeks/months/years to cross. He never stops moving. That was the significance of the stairwell sequence - even Killy, who's been walking for thousands of years without a word of complaint, was getting too tired of this shit. Talking Necklace thought he was dead because of how long he didn't move.

Does anyone here struggle to comprehend the size of the City?

http://joshworth.com/dev/pixelspace/pixelspace_solarsystem.html

Scroll through this until you get board, than imagine a mostly-solid chunk of metal that extends that distance in every direction. The mass alone would be more than our entire galaxy, potentially even more than an entire supercluster of galaxies.

>Does anyone here struggle to comprehend the size of the City?
Everybody does; it's impossible to understand.
Just imagine traveling through space, and you end up 100,000,000km or so away from something that you can't see beyond. There is just dark beyond that point, and that darkness extends in every direction in front of you. And then you suddenly realize it's a structure: an unnatural, sentience-created structure.

What scares me more than The City's broad mass is its internal maze. Being lost in arbitrarily constructed hallways for hundreds of thousands of years, built with no consistent logic and with no way of knowing that where I currently stood, I had stood 1,000 times before; only with different environs. The size of The City is incomprehensible. A map of The City goes beyond that.

Back when Sidonia was airing I remember hearing/seeing little tidbits about Nihei's other project called Blame!, but never really looked into it.

From this thread, it seems to be even more hard sci-fi than Sidonia was? It is pretty good?
>>
>>139273119
what is this?
>>
>>139268028
90% of the budget on the backgrounds, the rest on the animation. Seiyuus aren't important, there's like a total of 30 spoken sentences in blame.
>>
>>139273147
Blame! isn't even close to hard scifi. The City, Safegaurd, Killy's ability to recover from literally anything. none of the major elements in the story are feasible under anything resembling modern physics. That said its a great work and you should totally give it a read.

It's one of the best manga of all time purely out of being a fluke. If you look at Nihei now, you'll see he has absolutely no clue what to do with the franchise.

A map of the city would likely look something like this, extending outwards in every direction as far as you can see. And there's one tiny little dot impossible to see with the naked eye somewhere amongst the clusterfuck of twists, chasms, passages and chambers, slowly but surely making it's way across the whole thing occasionally destroying and rearranging small sections of the map. Really puts things in perspective, huh.
>>
>>139273416

Having justifications or explanations does not make a series hard sci-fi. Hard sci-fi sticks to what is theoretically possible based on a current understanding of physics. The City, for example, is created from some technology that takes mass from some parallel dimension, none of which is expected based on our current understanding of physics. This makes it soft sci-fi.
>>
Like a reverse Kino's Journey or Mushishi, where you're introduced to a particular zone of the megastructures and by the end of the episode or arc Killy is blasting his way through it

I had that in my mind for posting, but you have to remember that The City is three-dimensional. More than just expansive, the third dimension makes the possible intersections incredibly dense. If it were drawn on a two-dimensional plane like that, it would just be an ink-soaked black piece of paper.

Irrelevant. The City is probably around the size of the solar system, so it requires more mass than any currently posited technology can assemble.

The only thing that comes to mind in animation is Samurai Jack. That had a lot of scenes with Jack just walking through the wilderness. So if every episode had like at least five minutes of walking with either no sound of something like Killy's footsteps or breathing (like in The Revenant) it could work. Also the gun has to be loud as fuck.
>>
>>139273877
>>139273514
This. The City is 3D and because of that, and its sheer size as well as the fact that it is constantly being build/rebuilded no maps would work other than pointers showing relative distance and direction to the next destination IMO or something.

This, you'd have vast expanses of plat forming to complete.

Encounters will be built around a concept to use the environment to your advantage, even having to progress toward certain objects in chase format + using cover.

You'll be stalked in certain scenarios, stealth through vast levels, just think of a typical mission but the length is morrowind style city to city.
