I mean, it is a remake. I can't see a happy ending happen. Even in the anime series ending, shinji was stuck in instrumentality. 2/2 endings were bad endings so far.

Best we can do is mentally separate the rebuilds from the rest of the material and accept it doesn't make the series worse because it's not actually part of it.
